The biggest movement on a depth chart is after a scrimmage. I'll have a new one after practice on Tuesday.
Any update here? Not saying you don’t do enough already.

I'll see if we have enough healthy bodies at the end of spring camp. Right now we are missing several offensive linemen, a few WRs, and we are down to 3 healthy safeties and 3 healthy cornerbacks. I try to give a good reflection of where we stand and right now I can't in several spots.

Are any of the injuries long term that can affect summer and then fall camp?

I wonder about the injuries in spring camp, certainly to the O linemen. What are the causes of these problems and can those events be modified or eliminated? Also I wonder about the coming season when players don't have weeks and months to recover from significant injuries. What then? Are these players just too big and oversized for their natural frames? I just wonder about all those injuries seemingly spread throughout the roster. Looking for insight here my friends. and thanks in advance.

It does seem we are seeing more injuries this spring. It is for sure concerning. Hopefully they all can get healthy to have a good summer for preparation and be ready for fall camp.

Here is what I've put together as the depth chart after sitting through the first two days of practice.

https://247sports.com/college/utah-stat ... 162470986/
This is awesome work 22. Thanks for all that you do. Would expect this to change quite a bit in the next month and into fall camp. Hoping Bonner can get healthy soon.
I guarantee this depth chart will change.
What are the obvious depth chart changes you believe will happen? Definitely Moore will be a 1 or a co #1 on the Dline. Still trying to figure out why Hunter Hill can't rise up the charts. I see some movement on the Oline at the G and C positions. I believe one of the LGs will move to RG as well.
In the case of the defensive line, it doesn't really matter if you start or are on the second team. They line change like it's hockey so the first and second team guys will all see a TON of reps.
Curious as to why our roster moved everyone up a year while others around the country kept their eligibility the same as last year. Anyone know the answer to that?

<edit>
Also, it looks like only some of the players "advanced" years. For example, Quazzel White (class of '17) shows:
2017 - freshman
2018 - rs freshman
2019 - sophmore
2020 - junior
2021 - junior again

Whereas, Alfred Edwards (class of '17) shows:
2017 - freshman
2018 - rs freshman
2019 - sophmore
2020 - junior
2021 - senior
I do not. I don't know if they will just keep advancing them and they will one day reach super senior status. My depth charts reflect the players eligibility according to the eligibility freeze.
Yeah it is

This might be the best linebacker crew we've had since probably 2015. With Rice, Vongphachanh, Gilliam, and Heninger leading the group and guys like Meitzenheimer and Maile adding depth. If our d-line can get some pressure up from or at least eat up some blockers, those guys will be wreaking havoc!

If we don't win most improved on both sides of the ball next year in the MW, then I'm knackered.

Exclusively (as a hand-in-the dirt guy)? I know he played some OLB last year.

We are switching to a 4 lineman front. He fits as a DE in that scheme.

Ahhhh, remember Tipa? That LB>DE transition didn't go so well. Why does Heninger fit as DE?

Good point. But didn’t heninger play there 2 years ago and was pretty good there?

Because regardless of what he was ever listed as, Tipa was only 215 to 220 pounds. Having a dude that size put his hand in the dirt and try to beat a 300+ pound offensive tackle was a recipe for disaster. He was swallowed up on most plays. The old staff completely neutralized one of our best players. Nick Heninger is already a legitimate 235 and will likely add more weight this summer in order to take the pounding on the defensive line.

Well said, plus Tipa was often doubled and got held A LOT but was rarely called that year (obviously more strength would have helped). What about Byron Vaughns the transfer from Texas? He is also listed as a DE but he looks more like an athletic OLB. How has he looked in camp?

I only attended the first scrimmage, but Vaughns was a beast to handle and was constantly beating his guy and in the back field. It is hard to guage based on that scrimmage, but he seems like he has the potential to make a large impact on the defense this year.

2 years ago Heninger looked like our best player on defense a lot of the time as a DE in the 4-3 defense. Next year, it seems there’s a decent chance he’s not even starting at DE.

By the end of the 2021 season everyone in the Mountain West Conference will know who Byron Hobbs-Vaughn is.
Don't forget about Justin Rice at LB. Our defense got some legitimate all league guys added to it.

Question how did the interior of the dline look in spring? Too banged up to know?

This might be the best linebacker crew we've had since probably 2015. With Rice, Vongphachanh, Gilliam, and Heninger leading the group and guys like Meitzenheimer and Maile adding depth. If our d-line can get some pressure up from or at least eat up some blockers, those guys will be wreaking havoc!
Heninger will be playing defensive end.
Uggh

That scheme completely neutered Tipa. I still don’t understand the logic of doing that to him. I hope this staff knows how to utilize players to their strengths and not force them to a position they can’t succeed at.

They were solid early but injuries took it's toll. I never got a look at Jahaziel Lee.

That's an interesting debate:

2010's team had a linebacker corps of:

Bobby Wagner
Jake Doughty
Zach Vigil
Kyle Gallagher
Junior Keiaho
Matt Ah You
Maxim Dinka

That was a solid group.

By the end of the 2021 season everyone in the Mountain West Conference will know who Byron Hobbs-Vaughn is.
Reinforces my point that this year's LB core is going to be stacked!! Probably the best we've ever had (or at least since 2015). Can't wait!
Nick vigil, Zach vigil and kyler fackrell would like a word.

Probably a line up with Bobby Wagner as well.

But I’m excited as well.
That's an interesting debate:

2010's team had a linebacker corps of:

Bobby Wagner
Jake Doughty
Zach Vigil
Kyle Gallagher
Junior Keiaho
Matt Ah You
Maxim Dinka

That was a solid group.
Sorry, I see Jake Doughty's name and I think of one thing.

I replayed the Auburn v USU on-side kick over 20 times to see what happened. BWags blocked 2 Auburn players from getting to the ball by himself. Doughty completely whiffed. If he just gets in the way of somebody, we recover the ball and win that game. I don't blame him. It didn't look like he was the only one who had no clue what to do. Obviously, GA never lined up a team to defend an on-side kick in practice.

Is on-side kick coverage given a lot of time in practices leading up to the first game of the year against the defending National Champion? That might have come later? :noidea:

I would bet that the majority of freshmen that come in have never been involved in an onside kick in high school or even practiced one, for that matter.

Lol when I think of Doughty I think of a onside kick too... but a different onside kick. My next thought usually has something to do with a shopping cart.

And that is EXACTLY why, being just one example, I argue that GA, even in his first stint, was not that great of an in-game adjusting coach, and accomplished what he did cause of how great he was recruiting and developing players IN SPITE of being a poor in-game adjuster.

It likewise was an accomplishment he built our program to getting the big wins in 2012 over Utah and LA Tech, but those were wins we got IN SPITE of his poor in-game adjusting, rather than cause of it.

Craig Smith had that going for him also.
