Alabama stopping Ohio State with 10 guys brings back memories
of when old John L. Smith was at Michigan State and they rushed and kicked a field goal with 10 guys, and it got blocked and returned for a touchdown, and he screamed at the reporter that the coaches were screwing things up!

To be fair Ohio State showed they belonged by destroying Clemson, but it sure is weird having a 12-0 team play a 7-0 team.

Here is the halftime stats for passing:ThunderAggie wrote: ↑January 11th, 2021, 7:58 pmHeisman winner Smith having a night. 215 yards and 3 TDs in a half. WOW
OSU - 6 completions, 90 yards, 0 TDs
Devante Smith - 12 receptions 215 yards, 3 TDs
All the pundits were saying OSU had to stop Smith to have a chance. There is a reason why Devante Smith is the Heisman winner. On a team of great talents he shines the brightest. Mac Jones isn't bad but Smith has been pretty wide open on some of these and Jones just puts it where it needs to be. Would be nice to have a QB that could hit open receivers...or have open receivers.

I’m not sure Clemson belonged...they lost to ND and still had their QB put up over 400 yards throwing that game I believe. I think A&M probably deserved more than Ohio State.Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote: ↑January 11th, 2021, 8:19 pmTo be fair Ohio State showed they belonged by destroying Clemson, but it sure is weird having a 12-0 team play a 7-0 team.

Re: Alabama stopping Ohio State with 10 guys brings back memories
I have a theory that one of the keys to Alabama being so good because they just hire the discarded HCs that were quality and were either fired too soon by eager boosters or had non-disqualifying personal problems that made it hard for them to be HCs.
What other team loses their OC and then hires an nfl head coach to be OC? The quality of coaching at Alabama is evidently clear.
I really like that it seems BA is bringing in quality assistants for us. Coaching at the coordinator, S&C and position levels is so crucial.

A&M might have been the second best team in the country this year, but they lost to Bama by the same 52-24 score as tOSU did. Reality is this year there was just one clear cut dominant team.splintorb wrote: ↑January 11th, 2021, 9:10 pmI’m not sure Clemson belonged...they lost to ND and still had their QB put up over 400 yards throwing that game I believe. That is a big part of it. Saban is a great coach who hires great coaches. They also rank number 1 in recruiting almost every year.Imakeitrain wrote: ↑January 11th, 2021, 9:26 pmI have a theory that one of the keys to Alabama being so good because they just hire the discarded HCs that were quality and were either fired too soon by eager boosters or had non-disqualifying personal problems that made it hard for them to be HCs.

There is pretty much one clear cut dominant team EVERY year. The NFL creates a potential reset over time via the worst teams getting the best draft picks. In college, the rich just keep getting richer. No sour grapes here, just pointing out reality.

After all these years, I’ve started to appreciate Saban and his ability to reload every year. Until he leaves, Alabama won’t go away, so embrace it if you can stomach it.2004AG wrote:There is pretty much one clear cut dominant team EVERY year. Re: Alabama stopping Ohio State with 10 guys brings back memories
How hard is that, really? The playoff system basically tells recruits: if you want to win the national championship; you have to play for basically one of six programs, and more accurately one of three -- Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, and they pick in that order. Those three programs don't really recruit, they choose.seabass wrote: ↑January 12th, 2021, 9:14 amAfter all these years, I’ve started to appreciate Saban and his ability to reload every year. As long as the CFP is four teams, at least one of the constituting conferences is going to be out -- in practicality that is the Pac 12. And as long as the invitees are the best four teams instead of the best four conference champs, then about half the time a second conference is going to be out.
Until they expand the playoff to eight teams, including a guaranteed spot for each of the P5 champs and the best of the G5 (maybe with their own play-in arrangement), with two additional at-larges from any conference -- or to twelve, with the five G5 champs, the two lowest seeded P5 champs, and one at-large in the quarterfinal round -- or to sixteen, with the five G5 champs and six at-larges. . .
. . . the CFP is going to be Alabama, probably Clemson (since the rest of the ACC sucks and presumably ND will go back to playing as an Indy), and then some combo of ND, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Georgia and the SEC West runner-up as your final four 80% of the time. How much fun is that? (cf. March Madness)
Then you'll give players who want to play for a national championship exponentially more options, and maybe the Alabama dominance might a little less predestined.
How hard is it to be Nick Saban? Give any coach in America his advantages, his budget and the CFP status quo and he could probably do about as well.

Re: Alabama stopping Ohio State with 10 guys brings back memories
i also read that the Buckeyes were down 14 players due to COVID! Three starters and 2 of them on the DL.
I've not seen anything about how the Tide might have been impacted by the 'rona, but that leads me to believe it wasn't much of an issue (if at all) for them.
Not making excuses, but it *might* have been at least a little more competitive if OSU was at full strength.
*thought about mentioning OSU's starting running back that left the game early as well, but injuries are a part of the game. Smith left the game as well (but not before casting out all doubt about the outcome of the game AND his suitability for the Heisman award!!)

Re: Alabama stopping Ohio State with 10 guys brings back memories
I went to the USU-Alabama game when the Aggies last played there. That was a great experience and a baptism into SEC football. They know how to tailgate and enjoy their football in that part of the world. Incredible nice and accommodating fans - I don't know how many tailgate BBQs we got invited to just walking around campus and the parking lots wearing USU gear. And yes - I did hit up the Dreamland BBQ (twice) - once in Tuscaloosa and once in Birmingham.slcagg wrote: ↑January 12th, 2021, 8:05 amMake sure to get some dreamland for all of us who do not that option currently!BiocatAg wrote: ↑January 11th, 2021, 10:34 pmWell... they bought my fandom a few years ago (literally). I would argue it’s only 3 teams, with a wildcard team that gets the fourth spot. I.E. Notre Dame, Oklahoma, LSU.OKAggie wrote:How hard is that, really? I haven't ever been to BBQ joints in Memphis or Kansas City. They both claim to have good BBQ joints as well. Each region has its own unique flavors and twists on the BBQ. Anybody able to compare them?
We are getting a long way off topic and it's making me hungry.

I live in Kansas City and it is dang good but honestly it’s been long enough since I lived in bama that I don’t recall and couldn’t compare. I will say I love the sides at bbq places in the south much bettered. Hush puppies, home made mac and cheese, okra and banana puddin. There are a couple other Bama fans on here, and there are a few of us Aggies in Tuscaloosa.slcagg wrote: ↑January 11th, 2021, 9:28 pmWait I knew about Colorado aggie and him being a bama fan. Didn’t know we had another one on here.BiocatAg wrote: ↑January 11th, 2021, 8:40 pmRoll Tide!ThunderAggie wrote: ↑January 11th, 2021, 7:58 pmHeisman winner Smith having a night. 215 yards and 3 TDs in a half. WOW
It’s been 15 years since I’ve eaten there so I don’t really remember other than we thought it was great.
I haven't ever been to BBQ joints in Memphis or Kansas City. They both claim to have good BBQ joints as well. Each region has its own unique flavors and twists on the BBQ. Anybody able to compare them?
We are getting a long way off topic and it's making me hungry.
Would def like to try some places in Memphis.

Re: Alabama stopping Ohio State with 10 guys brings back memories
Matt Rhea is Bama's Director of Sports Science. He spent a couple of years in Cache Valley (grew up in Tooele) and has a son at USU right now. Today he was tweeting about the undefeated teams he's been a part of, including Logan High. Thought it was interesting to see Favero and Saban in the same sentence.
