Arkansas State starters > Utah rejects
At first thought, getting guys to transfer from PAC 12 Utah does sound more appealing than getting guys from Sun Belt Arkansas State. BUT, I do think getting the guys we have been able to cherry pick from Arkansas State so far, who have proven themselves in games, even against Sun Belt competition, sounds better than guys from Utah that just want to come here cause they won't see the field at Utah. For one thing, it at least shows work ethic that someone was able to beat out other teammates for playing time, something that isn't shown by just being on a P5 team.
Repp and Mariner turned out be good, but I do think we could have landed just as good of JC kids who we would get for at least two years instead of one. It was a valid concern that GA 2.0 was eventually going to run out of Utah reject Band-aids, and BA is similarly going to run out of top guys to cherry pick from ASU(though he pretty much already has)
I do think getting a Texas transfer sounds good, and there are a few differences between that and Utah, in that Texas gets higher caliber kids than even Utah, and a kid not seeing the field as a sophomore is different than kids that still don't see the field as an upper classman.

Re: Arkansas State starters > Utah rejects
I’ll be honest, other than Jason Shelly I’ve been very happy with all the Utah transfers. I wouldn’t mind landing Pita Tonga either. He’d fill a huge gap on the D-line.
I guess my opinion is that two things can be true at once. The people that Coach A are bringing in are awesome and having a 80% success rate for Utah “rejects” is great for our program as well.

Any one of these Utah transfers would be huge additions to our team:
Pita Tonga, DT
Jaylen Dixon, WR
Jordan Wilmore, RB
Devin Brumfield, RB

Jaylen Dixon was Jason Shelly's best friend so no shot in hell. Honestly, I imagine this staff will try and distance itself from taking transfer from Utah. At least for awhile.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑January 13th, 2021, 11:43 amAny one of these Utah transfers would be huge additions to our team:

I'd take Jaylen Waddle from Alabama as a transfer too.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑January 13th, 2021, 11:43 amAny one of these Utah transfers would be huge additions to our team:

And yes it doesn't matter the school, it matters the player. Fans on here have used Jason Shelley as an avatar for any player from the U of U. It is as if people forget Mariner came here and had 1000 yards receiving and 10 touchdowns just a season before.

Even if we want to distance from Utah transfers, I would make an exception for defensive tackles as Utah is notorious for being loaded there.aggies22 wrote: ↑January 13th, 2021, 11:47 amJaylen Dixon was Jason Shelly's best friend so no shot in hell. If it were up to me. Aside from the Shelley disaster the rest of the Utah transfers were great. We can't lump in the school they came from. I would take Mariner and Repp players in a heartbeat.

I’m a big fan of Nick Heninger as well! Anyone heard if he is sticking around?

Re: Arkansas State starters > Utah rejects
I don't think the whole P5 vs G5 is that big of a deal. The lowest rated QB in the Transfer Portal is Bailey Zappe. I promise you he will put up stupid numbers next year and enter the draft. He was at Houston Baptist and in 4 games vs FBS this year threw for 1800 yards and 15 TD's.GameFAQSAggie wrote: ↑January 9th, 2021, 1:57 pmAt first thought, getting guys to transfer from PAC 12 Utah does sound more appealing than getting guys from Sun Belt Arkansas State. I would take that kid all day long over 95% of the QB's in the portal.

I can't imagine he is, as it appears he was the ring leader (for good or bad, I'm not making a judgement here) in the Maile/Cockett fiasco.AGGIEinIOWA wrote: ↑January 13th, 2021, 12:13 pmI’m a big fan of Nick Heninger as well! Anyone heard if he is sticking around?
I would think he doesn't want to stay, but who knows. I hope he does. He's a good player.

I don’t think that will affect his decision to come back or to move on.3rdGenAggie wrote: ↑January 14th, 2021, 9:46 amI can't imagine he is, as it appears he was the ring leader (for good or bad, I'm not making a judgement here) in the Maile/Cockett fiasco.AGGIEinIOWA wrote: ↑January 13th, 2021, 12:13 pmI’m a big fan of Nick Heninger as well! I think the biggest determining factor whether he stays or goes will be if he finishes school or not.

Fresno is going to be legit next season. Washington transfer at QB with Ty Jones in at WR and now adding Wilmore as their RB.

Re: Arkansas State starters > Utah rejects
You're right, it's not that there's a talent gap, it's a depth gap. That's why most G5s hang with p5s until the second half in slot of games. Depth is what kills.MWCFAN12 wrote: ↑January 14th, 2021, 9:33 amI don't think the whole P5 vs G5 is that big of a deal. The lowest rated QB in the Transfer Portal is Bailey Zappe. Re: Arkansas State starters > Utah rejects
I wonder how hard (if at all) we went after Pita Tonga. I also wonder if the Andersen/Maile thing basically ruined any chance there to begin with anyways. I know he was looking at transferring to USU last year but ended up not.
