Thanks for putting this together!

Kent Riddle at tight ends eh? That's super interesting.

Some folks are claiming DeMarcus Van Dyke is also coming from Miami and will be out CB’s coach.

If true, sounds like DVD would be another big win. Miami fans feel like he is a killer recruiter (some think better than Banda even). They don’t want to lose him and Banda.

I’ve got the feeling we are gonna recruit like never before. I’m feeling quite optimistic.

The article claims that Devine will be a senior analyst not the D-line coach.

I wonder if the Kragthorpe connection helped get Riddle to USU?

This is definitely looking like the most diverse staff ever. Tons of ties to the south, recruiting could look a lot different moving forward. I've always thought Logan was the Mormon Miami.

Footballscoop is reporting the following today:

“As we shared a few weeks back, Bruce Feldman is now confirming Miami co-DC Ephraim Banda is headed to Utah State. Sources tell FootballScoop Miami defensive quality control Mike Zuckerman will also be going and will be working with the linebackers. Feldman adds that Alex Devine is also expected to join the Utah State staff. Devine’s current role is player development at Miami. Sources told FootballScoop last week Anderson had targeted adding South Carolina strength coach Paul Jackson in the same capacity. Will update when that one is more clear. Andrew Ivins adds that Miami assistant director of recruiting Demarcus Van Dyke also might go to Utah State.”

Really looking like DVD as our DB coach. We’re gonna get some great recruits from FL! My body is ready.

https://www.canesinsight.com/threads/dv ... te.167374/

Read tweet replies here:

Again, Miami fans are not happy to be losing Banda and DVD. They have major south Florida recruiting ties.

Edit: “Van Dyke has been credited for helping the Hurricanes land top-20 classes in each of the last two recruiting cycles.”

Not to be a Debbie downer here because I'm as excited about these two and their south Florida connections as anyone. But... convincing south Florida studs to play for the (real) "U" is one thing...convincing them to play for USU is quite another. I know there are lots of kids there, and there's no way we get them if we don't try. And the connections and relationships are important/helpful. Let's just make sure our expectations are realistic. I've lived in both places and I love Cache Valley with all my heart, but I can assure you that the 435 is NOT the 305 in so many ways. It'll be a tough sell, but I wish them the very best and hope they kill it for us...go Aggies!!

Another thing, there were concerns expressed in another thread with the lack of experience in our O-Line coach and how bad his team was. But another question is are the UMass fans happy about or sad about him going. Even them feeling neutral and not caring one way or the other is at least better than us hiring Weber and the BYU fans being happy about him being gone.

Yeah, we won’t be top 20 like they were at Miami. But, I could see us improving our recruiting ranking by 40+ spots. Maybe more? That matters. Going from 122nd ranked to 70th? I guess that’s possible.

Sounds like were snagging most of Miami's good recruiters, I like Van Dyke a lot reminds me of a Corey Raymond type of DB coach.

Coach Anderson said in a interview that there would be 2 or 3 guys that were poly, and 2 or 3 that were mormon and some utah guys on staff. I guess those could be 2 or 3 mormon polys from utah. Looks like the staff is pretty full and there wont be any full time coaches that are lds, poly or from Utah (chuckie is sort of from utah).

As a side note(not that I care too much), it might be a bad look after what went down with Frank, to not have any full time polys, mormons or utah guys. For some people that will be all they need to confirm that USU discriminates against Mormons and Polynesians.

Yeah, I could see that. Hopefully our GAs are LDS polys. But, I’m not worried about recruiting. It just won’t be very Utah heavy.

Even if the GAs are LDS Polys, confirmation bias will kick in. Big difference between GAs and Full time coaches.

Anderson did say in the same interview that Utah will still be a main focus in recruiting. We will see what happens, I would imagine that someone that is good a recruiting Florida kids can also recruit Utah kids at a high level.

This I agree with. Making kids feel that they are wanted as an important piece of the program can be done in any region. Every kid is different, so every recruiting pitch has be unique. I doubt that they go into each home and give the same ole “USU is the best for you” pitch every time. Good recruiters will figure out what the players goals are and make him see how USU football will fulfill them.

I have no clue what Anderson will do with his recruiting. i am guessing there is a good chance we move a little bit away from this formula. I just want to see a team that wins on the field, graduates their players and is good citizens off the field. Anderson needs to go about his building of the program in his way, it cannot be forced. I will give him the benefit of the doubt and am excited to see how it plays out. I don't believe you have to be LDS to recruit to successfully in Utah, you have to sell the program and be genuine with they players. A lot of the top LDS talent goes to PAC 12 schools who don't have huge numbers of LDS kid on their teams.

Guys, this Polynesian pipeline that you keep talking about is long gone.
It's like saying we need to re-invest in Horse and Buggy because that worked for us in the past.
No.
The best Polynesian athletes all go to Pac-12 schools. Look at Oregon versus USC in the PAC-12 championship. For some reason this was an under recruited niche 10 years ago but it's over.
The next best Polynesians that are mormon all go to BYU. Look at the track record since Sitake took over. We can't compete, we are wasting our time trying, because all we are getting is the scraps.
Please show the great Polynesian athletes that Frank Maile, Justin Ena or Bojay have brought in to our program since Sitake took over in Provo? Ena has had his son commit, and Maile had his cousin commit both of which will be going to BYU IF BYU has any interest in either.
Trying to turn back the hands of time to some forlorn strategy that worked back in the day is the recipe for disaster.
Let's see what these new guys can get in Florida, Texas, California or non-mormon's from Utah. We simply aren't going to win going after mormon Polynesians any more.

Throw Utah in the mix they get a huge number of poly's as well. I still think it is a niche that we can benefit from, but I do believe it should not be the only focus.

Who the New Coaches Are.

Didn’t we just sign/resign a group of Poly RM’s in this last class? I think they all have a chance of being contributors. I get it that they were recruited by the previous staff, or maybe even the staff before the last staff, but they elected to sign last month. BA’s staff may not continue to recruit that demographic quite as heavy but I hope we at least keep USU an inviting place for Utah, LDS, and Poly players.

This is a weird take. All the top Florida kids are staying in the south, all the top California kids are playing in the pac 12 all the top texas kids are playing at P5 school, so you want to take those scraps but not Polynesian scraps or mormon scraps? Cool.

Some of our best up and coming players right now are poly ( look at the RB room).

All else equal, if you have two identical players, a poly from utah or someone from Florida, who is more likely to come and stay in Logan?

Not saying every player needs to be from utah or Polynesian, but to ignore those players would be a mistake. In the end I want the best team possible, and do not care where the players come from.

However, we are going to have a even bigger perception problem is there is not a single lds or Poly full time coach. The court of public opinion already thinks USU discriminates against Polys and Mormons, that could get worse. But I also recognize that hiring someone just to prove that you are not a bigot is not a good way to hire.

In short, everything is complicated, and I know absolutely nothing.

I think that we are 100% on the same page in that we should take the best player.
All things being equal do you take the Utah kid over the Florida kid? For sure! Usually all things aren't equal though. You don't ignore Polynesian, Local or Mormon kids, but you don't over index your recruiting there, because it's no longer a winning formula.
It's my personal opinion that we could do far better with the athletes that weren't able to get into SEC schools from Florida or Texas than those that weren't able to get into the University of Utah and BYU here locally. That's just my personal opinon.
