It was my uncle that thought he wouldn't leave cause his mother in law didn't want him to. He was surprised when he found out today they are leaving.

Probably - but if he fails he’ll still have a fat contract. It’s got to be worth 10MM+. I’d make the same move.

And why I never blame a guy for making the jump. It sucks to lose great coaches, but I'll never fault a guy for improving his standard of living for him and his kids and probably their kids and their kids. We are talking about generational wealth.

Re: Harsin to Auburn
Buyout- I read one article that Harstin buyout started at 500k and was reduced yearly to where it is now only 250k.
That may limit Boise bringing in an established coach with a large buyout

Re: Harsin to Auburn
I can't predict the future but the last 2 times boise got a new coach they went to a fiesta bowl in his first year. In the past when boise has looked vulnerable, we blundered our chances of overtaking them. I would guess that if they take a step back next year, air force, Wyoming, or colorado state have a much better shot at claiming the mountain division than we do. We have a rebuild ahead of us.MaverickAggie wrote:Now is the perfect time for Utah State to establish at the top of the Mountain division. Boise will drop a few rungs I believe. CSU is down. WYO is proving to be mediocre under Bohl. New Mexico is down. Air Force is above average but will likely not be the top dog year in year out. If Boise falters, top of the Mountain is wide open. Take us there BA.

Re: Harsin to Auburn
He did a good job at Washington. Won the conference twice, had three 10 win seasons and made the playoff in 2016. He definitely elevated the program from when he took over. This is at a program that only had one 10 win season since Don James retired in the early 90's.

Re: Harsin to Auburn
I thought Peterson did a good job. He elevated Washington into the conversation for VERY highly rated recruits and in turn they began winning a lot of games more regularly.

Sometimes not even that since Auburn fired Gene Chizik two years removed from a national title.

A little different, moore is an OC in the nfl where detmer was coaching high school. Still a risk where he has not coached in college. He will for sure want to bring in some experienced coaches. Re: Harsin to Auburn
In all reality, "Struggling and failing" by Boise standards is still accomplishing good things by the standards of other Mountain Division teams. Losing 2 games a year is bad by their standards, and it's failure for them if ANY of the other teams win the Mountain Division but them. So we do want them to start failing by that high standard, and there to start to be some parity in the MTN Division. But we also would still want them to win all their OOC games.stwinward wrote: ↑December 26th, 2020, 7:16 pmNow, now. It's never nice to wish ill on others. I would argue that by wanting the other teams to win the division if not us, that it's not "wishing ill" on Kellen Moore or whoever is hired, just wishing good for Wyoming, Colorado State, Air Force and New Mexico.

Re: Harsin to Auburn
As badly as I want for Boise to suck canal water every season, the more healthy option is for Boise to stay great and for the Aggies to elevate their game to be better. We don’t want to consistently beat a terrible Boise team. We want to beat a good Boise team consistently. Much better bragging rights.stwinward wrote: ↑December 26th, 2020, 7:16 pmNow, now. Re: Harsin to Auburn
Different, but similar in that a fanbase falls in love with a former star player who isn't up to the job. My opinion that Moore could not deliver Boise State expectations. I hope they hire him. Avalos would be the better hire for them.Aggie84025 wrote: ↑December 26th, 2020, 5:36 pmA little different, moore is an OC in the nfl where detmer was coaching high school. Re: Harsin to Auburn
Geez, he’s 32. This is the equivalent of Sam Merrill playing a few years in the nba, assistant coaching one nba team for 3 years, then being hired to replace Craig smith (theoretical, obviously, as coach smith will never leave). I think most Aggie fans would be very excited about this. Objectively, I think it would be quite risky, but who knows?
Also, can he fill out a coaching staff? That’s probably the biggest question.

Re: Harsin to Auburn
Oddly, it had reached a point where Boise being good is actually bad for the MWC. Their sweetheart deals and regular threatenings to leave or blow up the conference unless they get more sweetheart deals are far worse for the conference than them being average or bad would ever be.
For the health of the MWC, Boise really needs to screw this up in the biggest way.

Re: Harsin to Auburn
The danger of hiring a coach so young and inexperience, is he would not be prepared for the "CEO duties" of being a HC and that leads to failure everywhere. It is a pretty daunting task to run a major college football program. There is a reason even guys who were great coordinators like Norm Chow failed at it. I don't think Moore is there yet.flying_scotsman2.0 wrote: ↑December 26th, 2020, 9:17 pmGeez, he’s 32. And yeah, it would be comparable to hiring Merrill in 2026 or so. There would be people on here that would support that as there were people on here mad that Spencer Nelson wasn't retained by Smith. It is actually a step beyond that since running a football program is a bigger and more complex deal than basketball. Think of Maile. Many people wanted him as our coach and he has far more experience than Moore, but is also not qualified.

Re: Harsin to Auburn
Also he has never recruited a single player. Never walked into a living room and convinced a mother to trust him with their child. Coaching in college and the nfl seem to be very different beat beasts. He could be an amazing nfl coordinator, not having any college coaching experience would scare me if i was a Boise fan.3rdGenAggie wrote: ↑December 27th, 2020, 10:09 amOddly, it had reached a point where Boise being good is actually bad for the MWC. Re: Harsin to Auburn
Insightful post jps, insightful. Boise has done and is doing so many things the right way, and I expect the real decision makers are unseen yet busy working their magic. Seems to me you are right when you note the risks are too high for a pair of major lane changes for them.
I would suspect Boise wants even more leverage in the MWC ergo their public noise about a discrete contact regarding jumping leagues. So much downside for Boise moving to an association of schools in the eastern time zones. I'm sure we all remember the last public bust they were involved in along with SDSU when the eastern centered conference they were about to align with abruptly disintegrated, and they came back to the MWC and played our conference like a financial drum. I would say, NEVER EVER AGAIN

only sort-of aggie related, but i thought it was interesting that CBS Sports is reporting that three of the four HC candidates at Boise have no ties to the program (that I can ascertain; https://www.cbssports.com/college-footb ... hort-list/):
Andy Avalos
Jeff Choate
Brian Johnson
Graham Harrell
The search seems to be picking up steam since they hired their AD... Here's hoping for a hire...

Re: Harsin to Auburn
Jeff Choate was an assistant under Dennehy and some would argue at the time was part of the problem. So him getting the Boise job and being successful there(even by their high standards) would further validate a point some people make that coaching was NOT our biggest problem prior to the north endzone and stable conference affiliation, and that facilities, conference affiliation, and budgets among other things were bigger problems than coaching. Other examples that prove that point include Gary Patterson and Brian Billick, among others who have turned out to be good NFL coaches. Even Darrell Dickey, who some people would argue WAS the problem when he was here, is now the OC at Texas A&M who was close to making the playoff.ShowMeAggie wrote: ↑January 7th, 2021, 5:58 pmyou're right...somehow I missed that Choate was in Boise from 06-11 as defensive position and special teams coach. some outlets saying Choate is their top target now, in fact (https://billingsgazette.com/sports/coll ... 8bfee.html). we'll see...Sl7vk wrote: ↑January 7th, 2021, 5:24 pmChoate and Avalos have ties.ShowMeAggie wrote: ↑January 7th, 2021, 2:38 pmonly sort-of aggie related, but i thought it was interesting that CBS Sports is reporting that three of the four HC candidates at Boise have no ties to the program (that I can ascertain; https://www.cbssports.com/college-footb ... hort-list/):

We'll see how this one plays out. The kind of staff he can put together will be a major factor.
His defenses at Oregon were, meh.... and he had no lack of talent to draw from. BSU has talent but they don't have guys like Thibodeaux....
