What order would you rank position of need from the Transfer Portal?

Post by Roy McAvoy » December 13th, 2020, 9:41 am

We obviously have a lot of holes that need to be filled, but only limited spots. Given there's only a max 25 spots each season it's prudent to not overload on transfer players each year.

I would rank the need for the 8 position groups (Excluding special teams):

1. DL
2. QB
3. OL
4. DB
5. WR
6. LB
------------
7. RB
8. TE

I guess it depends on what scheme we run on both sides of the ball. If we're moving to a 4-3 then it's DL for sure. Where would you rank safety help in this? Would that be DB? The other unknown is Bond. If I were a betting man I'd say he's transferring.

I would say WR, LB or DL (scheme dependent), QB, S.

I'm SHOCKED you have LB and WR so low. Depending on how Coach Anderson chooses to handle his scholarships, we may have as few as 5 to give but no more than 10.

What are the variables on the difference between 5 and 10?

We have two commits that are on the fence. And the staff choosing whether to count the high school kids as initial counters or push them forward to August. Pushing them forward would open up MUCH needed room to add players that can enroll in school to participate in spring ball.

After some new recruits and some time to think on this I'd rank my current opinion on positions of need as this:

1. LB
2. DL
3. Safety
4. WR
5. OL
------------- (big drop off in need IMO)
6. RB
7. Corner
8. TE
9. QB (Mainly because we're not bringing in an another transfer QB)

I feel this is very relevant now because it does sound like we are in fact hitting the portal hard right now. :golfclap:

Do we know if the seniors/grad players on the Dline such as Marcus Moore, Fata, Te’i, Bannerman, or Pitcher are returning?

I think it is interesting that OL is high on the priority list. I agree that the team has lost a couple of young guys who seem to have quit football and Heneli entered the portal, but wasn't this supposed to be the strength of the team entering last year? I think there are only 2 Jr/Sr that even get PT. Most are Sophomores and there is still Motes, Owens and Hill up and coming.

Did Woods screw us up that much?

I get it, they played like trash last year, but this position seems like less of a transfer need and more of a development need.

This is great news if Moore returns. That guy plays with some fire. I also think WR is one of the top priorities. I’m not as worried about OL and don’t think we need to necessarily get a transfer. We do need to add some more depth but I think we could sign some hs players for that. DL/safety/LB could each use a transfer or two and one more RB is needed to add to the stable.

I agree 100 % .. LB / WR ... ....huge gap...everything else.

Interesting enough. What is your take o. How we got in such a crunch. Was this Matt Wells not recruiting because he was leaving ? GA over reacting and bringing in to many guys that pushed forward... Not weeding out enough guys ? How did we end up here ?.. And even more important when will the crunch ease up ?

Going back to Matt's last few years here, I was told that WR's are a dime-a-dozen and not an early priority in recruiting. The previous coaching staff pushed forward WAY TOO MANY guys. That is what created our current scholarship crunch. I have not done the math yet BUT we'll probably have double digit open scholarships in the summer. Now the question is how do they get used?? Do you fill them all and push them forward? That's what the last staff did. Do you determine what immediate needs you have coming out of spring ball and just use a few to address those issues?? That would be the better route. As far as when our scholarship crunch will ease? It completely depends on how the summer openings are used. As early as the 2022 class or not until 2023 where we currently only have 7 or 8 scholarship juniors.

I'm just guessing based on what BA has said in interviews, but I expect he'll go with your second suggestion here. He has basically said that recruiting for next year is his top priority and they'd be signing already committed guys and filling holes this year. I bet he wants to clean up the scholarship numbers and will just leave several of the open summer scholarships open for the 2022 class.

We need size and more size. Some speed and nasty would be nice too.

We need some LB's with great speed. We have seen quite slow in that position the last few years.

Interesting. I'd love for you to expound more on this. You feel our weakest position is one that already has:

Kyle Mayberry
Zahordri Jackson
Andre Grayson
Cam Lampkin
Xavion Steele
Jakob Robinson
Michael Anyanwu
Jarrod Green

And rank a position (Safety) far down the list that has:

Shaq Bond
Luke Marion
Dom Tatum
Breaker Mendenhall
Crew Wakely
Keith Harris
Jared Reed

I'd love to hear additional thoughts.

Those would be how I recruit. Obviously coaches saw what I saw in the corners and went out and got a great corner. Need at least one more like mayberry. Until mayberry we did not have a lockdown corner on our roster based on those that played last year. Now some of them could develop into that but all of them need some serious coaching

Ranking of best to needs most work of our CB is below

Xavion Steele - route recognition needs improved and in air ball skills

Jarrod Green - route recognition and playing proper leverage and deep ball man to man skills

Cam Lampkin - thrown in the fire early, struggles on getting off blocks and man to man coverage on shorter routes

Andre Grayson - undersized on outside wr and shedding blockers

Zahordri Jackson - afraid of contact and making tackles, getting off blocks and attacking runners. Man to man skills

Jakob Robinson & Michael Anyanwu can't give a fair assessment

As far as the safeties. Only Luke and tatum had the opportunity to play last year. I think what is in the stock is actually pretty good and given the opportunity will show that. I for one did not think lefeged was one of the top 4 but he played anyways and so I am hoping with the new staff they will give a fair opportunity to them all.

I always dig your insight! Thanks Bybs!
Anytime if all I could do was analyze players and get paid for it

Here's where I'm at now understanding we have limited spots. I think we need:

2 OL
1 Safety
1 DT
1 WR

in that order.

We are going to have to use some summer "push forwards" to address some spots I'm afraid.

If one of the safeties in the scheme we play is really a hybrid outside linebacker then I think we are fine.

Things just got more simple. I talked to Bo Maile last night, he is still signing with the Aggies in February. If the new staff pushes Bo and Ike Larsen forward, we have 6 spots left. If they do not, we have 4 spots left.
