I suggest watching UNC and Miami today for a look at your potential DC
Whose that?
Aggies22 tweeted this so I’ll share but Ephraim Banda the safeties coach at Miami
Is Ephraim Banda a good candidate, I have no idea how good he is?
He looks awesome from my angle.
Recruiting machine. I’ll be interested to see what kind of system he deploys in Logan.
Plus his first name would indicate that he’ll fit in perfectly with the predominant religion in CV. 🤣

Looks like a solid hire with good recruiting connections.

Legendary name among Valley Grizzly bears too. 🐻 win win

Pretty cool story on Banda. Guy seems like he will work hard and be a grinder.

I would take Cort Denison in a heartbeat. Co DC at Louisville, and a GREAT recruiter. It would be a long shot though.

Anybody worried that Miami gave up 700+ yards to NCarolina today? NCAA record 544 yards to their top two RBs. Hopefully it was on the other co-DC :joking:

What others are saying on here is that the guy we are wanting is not actually “co DC”. They gave him the title for wage or something?

He is their safeties coach. Richt was going to name him Co-DC when Diaz left for temple but then richt quit Diaz came back and demoted him and hired Blake baker to be the DC (who is an incompetent disaster) but Banda retained that title. He does not call plays.

Rock solid recruiter. How he is in command of a defense will be a mystery. Almost certainly taking a pay cut to come here so he must want to see how he can do calling the shots.

Are there any concerns about his experience level in running a full defense? He seems like a really great guy, I just wonder about the ability to lead a whole defense and call plays.

Yeah that’s a fair concern. He worked for Diaz at Texas then Mississippi state then Miami. I think he was a GA at Texas for a couple years without Diaz there but he’s always been in his shadow so stepping up to call a defense and lead the unit is a real question. Ideally, one of our position coaches on that side will be a vet with some experience who can be leaned on for advice

I assume he’ll bring the system Diaz uses because that’s what he knows. It’s a feast or famine system. Intentionally lacking gap discipline in an effort to create chaos and get DL up the field to get sacks or tackles for loss. It can be suffocating (see their game against ND in 2017). It can also create huge gaps and if the LBs don’t fill (and their LBs are the worst in program history right now) then you’ll get games like today.

If he’s the hire I think it would be an excellent pick up overall. He’s a great recruiter high energy guy that players love and I think he’d be really good for that side of the ball right now but there’s some risk in him learning on the job a bit

Do we really want Manny Diaz's system here? Maybe I need a few days to be objective. Diaz's defense today was the worst defense I've ever seen a college football team put out. Not a bad performance, not a historic performance, but the worst ever. Wow that was awful.

I have high hopes for Anderson, but "Manny Diaz defensive system" isn't an exciting prospect if you watched the Miami game today.

They’ve also consistently been in the top 10-20 in the country in sacks, tackles for loss, and turnovers forced over the last 5 years. Like I said, it can be great or it can be really bad.

If you watched every Miami game the last 5 years you’d probably feel ok about it. If you just watched today then obviously your reaction is appropriate. I think the philosophy is good. Attack gaps, get upfield, create big plays, etc. but as their defensive talent has declined the last couple years it has been easier to expose its weaknesses so I hope if it is Banda that he keeps the core philosophy (it’s similar to what Orlando did in that the front 7 has to be aggressive and creative and we loved that defense) but tempers it a bit and keeps a heavier box more of the time

He is also the co-defensive coordinator. Extremely good hire. This staff is shaping up to have the most overall coaching talent in the history of Aggie football and it’s not even close.
He has that title but it’s just a pay bump thing. Richt was going to name him DC when Diaz left then Diaz hired Blake Baker to be DC but they let Banda keep his title. He’s their safeties coach.

Miami is the team I follow the most so I’m very familiar with him. Great recruiter. He’ll be the best on our staff day 1. High energy. Diaz hired him at Mississippi state and brought him to Miami. Never called a defense of any kind at the college level.

I imagine he’ll bring Diaz system with him which is 4-2-5 aggressive 1 gap front
but anybody that knows anything knows that we'll NEVER be successful with a 4-man front :stirpot:

All about the D-ends and the corners. 4 man front D-ends are hard as hell to find for a G5 but if you get them its an awesome D.

Completely agree with your post! I agree that he will bring the 4-2-5 with him. We should be able to score some transfer dlineman with the recruiting prowess of these coaches. It will be if we can bring in some young guys to learn behind them. This defense if recruited properly will be dominant in the mountain west. It is just really hard to get 8-10 legit d lineman
Not like linebacker has been that big of a strength for us this year.

I’ve been reading the Canes forum and I’m seeing some great stuff about Ephraim:

“All I know is before Banda got here our safety play was mediocre at best, with Banda it’s been light years better especially in the tackling department.”

“He's the best recruiter we have on Defense”

“ he has recruited all 4 stars since he got here. landed the top safety in country last year and he put every player he (rumph) coached in NFL.”

On defense “Banda is the best hands down, he's arguably the best recruiter on the team, it's between him & Coach Field.”

“ Man it’s nice to see Banda develop and become a rising star. Proved me wrong.”

I sort of hope not based on their defensive ranking and stats over the past several years.

I think it's a pretty solid yes, Banda is coming here. There has been smoke and nothing suggesting otherwise. Miami is probably headed to a bowl so we may not hear before then.

An aggressive gambling defense is a good match with a go fast offense. It lessens the amount of time the defense is on the field. It leads to stops, turnovers, or quick scores. Seven minute grind out drives are rare. You want to protect your defense from being worn out in the 4th and it gives your high powered offense more opportunities.

It is also a good defense when you are over-matched on talent. If you can't stop them with standard schemes, take your chances with aggression. Even though you often get scored on easily, there are still those times you get those sacks and force a punt or get a turnover instead of giving up a touchdown at the end of almost every long methodical drive.

An aggressive defense requires speed. I hope that is what is being recruited.

Any guy who, while bartending, played in a semi-pro barnstorm league where he saw one of his teammates lose a finger in a game is a guy you gotta like.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Attack gaps, get upfield, create big plays, etc. but as their defensive talent has declined the last couple years it has been easier to expose its weaknesses so I hope if it is Banda that he keeps the core philosophy (it’s similar to what Orlando did in that the front 7 has to be aggressive and creative and we loved that defense) but tempers it a bit and keeps a heavier box more of the time
An aggressive gambling defense is a good match with a go fast offense.

That makes a lot of sense to me. Force something major to happen fast so your offense can get back on to score. We all want to see a more aggressive defense anyways.

Our best defenses in the last decade were known for being aggressive. We always brought a blitz from somewhere and played mostly man coverage.

Our defense wasn't half bad this year in the few moments against NM and Fresno that we were aggressive. Then we decided that was far too effective and mean and dropped back into an 8 man front with the worst coverage scheme or execution imaginable. I mean how do guys get wide open in 1 and 1 coverage behind you when you are more or less playing 3 safeties?

AFA was a different issue where you have to maintain more disciplined assignments but the primary problem was that our guys were sitting back and not attacking their alleged assignments while AFA receivers were attacking them downfield.

The last two games against Air Force have been an embarrassment on defense. And it wasn't just the option run defense. We were getting destroyed in the passing game too (which is completely inexplicable considering it is, well,...... Air Force). They need to devote and entire week of off-season practices to defending the option. Every team that ran an RPO had great success on the majority of the plays they ran it. We were like Keystone Cops defending the option plays.

It was inexplicable. The best I could tell our corners were supposed to have pitch but they were playing 10 yards off the ball and being blocked downfield by AFAs wideouts. We did a decent job against the dive and the QB except for one play and then late in the game. But the pitch was 15-20 yards whenever they wanted it and we made not one single adjustment to forestall that. And when they decided they wanted to throw instead we made no attempt to cover their inside receivers except in a loose zone.
