11 PAC12 (5 to Utah)
5 to BYU
2 to MWC (1 each UNLV, USU)
2 Uncommitted (well, 1 of these is the Falslev kid from Sky View who decided on basketball instead?)

I'd like to see Maile stay as AHC if he's willing and maybe Collins could be special teams and position coach as well as Bojay and DJ staying on staff. I think the most important hire will be Defensive Coordinator as Anderson seems to be more involved on the offensive side of the ball. Maybe Yost will be available to bring back as OC. Seems Anderson likes offense and Yost's style may suit his philosophy ok.
I agree but highly doubt it will happen. One thing we have to keep is our Poly pipeline and recruiting the State of Utah.
Why do we need to recruit Utah? Why is that a focus?
Because there are lots of good players that come out of Utah and we have a leg up on getting many of them compared with out of state programs. Why would you NOT focus on recruiting Utah?
Look and see how many of the top 20 players in Utah we actually land.
What do you mean? How many top 20 Utah players does anybody in the MWC land?
maybe I am wrong but I would guess that the top 20 in utah .. about half would stay with someone in state and the other half are going to big time P5 schools..
I agree, and of the 10 that stay in state, most years 10 go to BYU or Utah. It's unfortunate, but it's the reality. Doesn't mean we should not recruit Utah heavily every year. Generally speaking, no less than 25% of the roster should be Utah kids.

Now, if Anderson can start pulling in kids from Texas and California that are better than anybody we could get in Utah, great. I just don't see that happening enough to not keep local recruiting as a pillar of the program.

I guess I don't understand your point. How many top 20 players of ANY state (outside of maybe Wyoming, Montana, the Dakotas and Delaware) does any G5 program pull in? Boise might get a couple, but other than that...

That's not who we will ever be, so I don't expect that.

I for one am not excited about this hire at all. Just seems to be a mediocre fill in at best. I thought it was said we had high profile coaches wanting this job. No offense to Blake Andersen and his resume but I wouldn't call an his performance there at ASU above average . I give this whole thing " meh".I hope I am wrong

If we have a consistent 6-7 win team I am absolutely satisfied. Guys seems like a solid hire. He has his work cut out for him, but for sure a solid get.
Screw that! I want our team to be in the MWC championship game regularly with a shot at the non-P5 BCS slot once every 3-4 years.

Years ago, I had people in Logan and the surrounding area tell me they had no interest in "going to watch a bunch of Californians play" when I asked them why they didn't attend games. I don't know if this is still a prevalent attitude up there? That may be one advantage to taking a marginal local kid over a marginal out-of-state kid. You may get an attendance boost (or take an attendance hit if you completely ignore Utah kids in recruiting). Fans like to feel a connection to the players they support.

This is very exciting. He seems like a great guy and in a sense reminds me of Gary 1.0. I think Logan will be a great fit for him and he could be with us for quite awhile.

Can't a coaching staff heavily recruit in state players AND use connections to recruit hard in other states/regions?
Agreed. I'm fine with us landing just a handful of in-state (especially Polynesians) prospects every year. Most of our best prospects have come from other places. Let's face it, Utah players are not really known for their uhh "speed."

We all want that, but there is no coach that would guarantee that type of success. Getting a proven winner in FBS D1 is a good hire.

I don't know who is thinking that we take Utah kids over higher rated recruits out of state. We need to scour the country for the type of recruits we need BUT that includes the Utah Kids. There are a lot of recruits from the poly community that end up going the JC route for NCAA qualification that would have otherwise been in the top 20 and plenty of kids outside this group that have the ability to develop. The missionary kids are the same way. Strong Poly connections and reach out and support to LDS mission kids is critical to us. That doesn't mean we pass up better recruits if the choice is there whatever the background is.

The two are not mutually exclusive rather USU needs to be creative and committed in recruiting and that includes strengthening the ties and dancing with what brought us.

Correct. Kevin Curtis was really slow :joking: The vigils were fast enough, so are many other on our current roster. I really like Robinson the freshman corner, Kina Maile, Neves and the freshman Poly D end that has been playing. I believe they are all from Utah.

This is the key, and it's the hardest part to find. Hence the reason Boise is basically the only G5 program that has done it for more than a couple years.

I’m curious as to why some would find Graham Harrell to be a great hire and also think Anderson was a bad hire.

Agreed. His offenses have been outstanding every year. Top 20. Now if he can get the defense right he will turn into a hell of a hire. Thats the ? mark in my mind. His teams give up a lot of points and rushing yards.

This video about Anderson says a lot about him as a person.

I’m curious as to why some would find Graham Harrell to be a great hire and also think Anderson was a bad hire.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Harrell is seen as a young up and comer with a lot of potential. Anderson is seen as a finished product. Stable, nothing flashy, above average.

I don't think Anderson is a "bad" hire, I think he is a "meh" hire. Me personally, I'm ok with the hire. I don't think he's a homerun, but he's not a strikeout. He's a solid double.

That’s fair. When you have a finance guy as your AD you probably aren’t going to see a lot of risky hires. This is a good, safe hire.

So we were hoping from one great season from Harrell. He's an OC, never been a head coach. No guarantee of success and if he did have it was gone probably after the first 8-5 season. I like this. We might lose him if we have a really great year (probably will). But he has the potential to be really good for a few years. We just need to get the defense right.

Hearing Kyle Cefalo is coming with him. You will love him. Once he took over WR they became beasts blocking and fighting for the ball. Your WRs will improve
This is GREAT news because it's been consistently our biggest weakness year in and year out for at least a decade. No offense, Tania.

I agree, and of the 10 that stay in state, most years 10 go to BYU or Utah. It's unfortunate, but it's the reality. Doesn't mean we should not recruit Utah heavily every year. Generally speaking, no less than 25% of the roster should be Utah kids.
What are you basing the 25% number on? I don't know if I've ever seen a Utah State roster with 25 or more Utah kids that are MWC caliber.

“The Red Wolves have won at least seven games every season under Anderson's coaching, including a 9-victory campaign in 2015 and eight-win years in 2016, 2018 and 2019. “

Weren’t we just saying a few days ago that 7 wins every season would be good to great at USU? I’m pumped.
We all want that, but there is no coach that would guarantee that type of success. Getting a proven winner in FBS D1 is a good hire.
Bosie has proven it's possible with the right, innovative coaches and excellent continuity.
Yep and we got a ways to go to be Boise State.

After watching this video and seeing his players interact with him, I know he will be a coach his players will do anything for. Heck, I am willing to run through walls for him after watching the video. Seems like a great guy and I am stoked he is going to be an Aggie!

From a car perspective, this hire seems like buying a new Toyota Camry or Tacoma type of hire. Nothing flashy but solid and dependable. The type of vehicle that won’t turn heads as you drive through campus but which will impress your GF’s or BF’s parents because it shows you are a practical and solid person who knows how to utilize resources wisely. While many were hoping for a Land Cruiser or even a Lexus 460 or perhaps a Nissan GT-R, Utah State, is a Camry or a Tacoma type of school - solid and value oriented. I do think that 6-7 wins is not a successful coach, however. I think 8-9 is more in line of where I’d like to see us as a floor with double digits wins not an unheard of thing. Certainly, a dependable long-lasting coach, that knows what he is doing, can get us there. This may very well by the FB team’s version of Stew Merrill but with someone who will play the bigger schools. Time will tell.

Have we ever hired a more proven successful coach than Blake Anderson? We’ve resorted to FCS coaches, coordinators, or second chance retreads for the past few decades. I’d think we’d all be pretty stoked about this hire.

Keep this in mind as well as far as recruiting to asu vs the other sun belt teams. Arkansas is one of the least talent rich states in that grouping. You have teams from Texas to North Carolina and the state of Arkansas has about the least talent. Those are pretty solid rankings considering that.
