Damage to the state of the program

I have the same sentiment as many fans currently in that this is going to take years for us to recover from.
Not looking forward to being in the espn bottom 10 list for the next couple years.

We thought the same after Duryea left. I'm more bullish on a quick turnaround.

Much easier to turn a basketball program around quickly than a football program.

It may not be as be as difficult as it could have been if the one time transfer immediate eligibility rule passes in January as expected. If we get the right hire with the right connections we could fill the roster back pretty quickly with the amount of immediate playing time we have to offer.

I'm not worried. I think we'll win 7+ games and be back in a bowl game in 2022

One thing you have to wonder is if the rule change helps us more than it hurts us, if we will gain players being able to leave other programs better than the ones we lose cause they can leave us.

As with any program that is a very real possibility.

I'd love for you guys to be right, but I just don't see the talent on the team that is going to turn it around soon. We are every bit as bad as our record. It will take great coaching and great recruiting to make us winners again. Basketball is a much different animal and we already had sam Merrill in the program.

Basketball is easier to turn around. You need 2-3 solid players that buy into a system. We may need a specialty approach on offense like a wildcat/pistol or spread/RPO to make up for young unproven talent to put points on the board.
Best case is a 7 win season in 2022 after a 4 win rebuild in 2021(2 cupcakes w/NDSU, and NMST).

Our talent is better than our play. Football is the ultimate team sport. Talent alone doesn't make a good team. We've been divided in lots of ways. We got to come together.

There have been other issues for sure, but I'm just not seeing a talented team that can win at a high level. Sure with great coaching we improve next year, but a winning season from this will be a tough ask. We are very far from being a 7 win team.

I agree that the talent may be better, or at least have better potential than the record indicates. The schedule so far has been tough. There haven't been many flashes of brilliance to focus on, but I think the third quarter at Boise was one. Our guys came out and won that third quarter. They then promptly got blown off the field in the 4th lol, but it was something ...
Moving forward, with the right coach, anything is possible. Never count out a bunch of rowdy misfits with nothing to lose ... that's why I love being an Aggie.

I’m optimistic about the rebuild, especially if we get the right coach.
Not only will we benefit off incoming transfers, but I think returning 4-5 starting O-linemen with a full offseason to improve will pay off.
Just got to get the right coach.

I'm hopeful we can get beyond this Covid so we can attend the games. I'm really curious to see if our fan base will support the new staff and our players. It's going to be a rebuild, so we'll see who's up for the challenge.

Well if you're a younger fan an not used to doom and gloom, you are lucky. It has been the norm for a long time before this past decade. We will be down for probably 3 years. 1 to try and compete, 1 to actually compete, 1 to win a few of those games we compete in. We are in for a long haul.

The cupboard isn't bare but you could say 50 positive things to certain players on this roster and 1 Negative thing and they'll focus on the one Negative. I realize that is human nature and there isn't a whole lot of positive energy. My point is there is still skill but they need leadership.

I think we are going to see a significant reduction in fans attending games in every sport at every level. It was already trending that direction and this forced break will reveal to many more fans that they can live just fine without them.
Hope I’m wrong.

I'm not that young. I was at almost every football game from 2001-2010. I saw a lot of bad Aggie football. What I have seen through 4 games this year is not promising. It doesn't lead me to believe we will have a quick turnaround. Obviously I'd love to be wrong.

Yes, our talent is much better than our play. Football is the ultimate team sport and talent by itself isn't always the solution. Team play, proper off season training, individual player to program commitment with coaching technique, game planning and real time adjustments are essential to success.

To be clear, we are playing North Dakota in 2021, not North Dakota State, right? Because if we are playing NDSU, that is not a cupcake by any means. That would probably be our toughest game of the year (and I say that knowing that we have Washington State and Boise on the schedule). NDSU has absolutely dominated FCS over the past decade or so (and have beaten some ranked FBS opponents during that time). They would be a consistent top-25 team if they played FBS, IMHO.

I agree. The 2022 schedule sets up nicely for bowl eligibility (subject to change).
@ Alabama
vs. Air Force
@ Boise State
@ BYU
@ Colorado State
@ Hawaii
vs. New Mexico
vs. San Jose State
vs. UCONN
vs. UNLV
vs. Weber State
@ Wyoming

I trust Hartwell to find a great coaching hire. Let's compare basketball. We had packed arena's under Stew's careful watch, but it started to trend downward with losing seasons. Then we hired Duryea, and the attendance was pitiful. It only took Smith 1 year to bring the spectrum magic back. I believe the right coach will turn the football program around in 1-2 years if we get the right guy. I know football is different, but the right attitude and confidence will translate to a winning program.

Has there been any real information as to what happened? Two years ago USU was a top 25 team on the way to an 11 win season. Last year at this time the Aggies were finishing another winning regular season, anticipating another bowl bid and being led by the coach who had built a winning program with a first round draft pick at QB. Now the program is winless, effectively rudderless, and players and coaches are looking for the exits. What did Gary do to this program?! Does anyone really know what was happening in the Laub building? Has Gary said anything to anyone since leaving? Has any player come out and talked about what was happening? There is a lot of smoke, and the foundation seems to be collapsing, and nobody really seems to know how or why it happened. Nothing about this epic collapse makes any sense.
