Will we ever know......

Hey Mr. Aggies 22, in your opinion will we ever know the full story behind Shelley coming and Henry leaving. Which led to what, Gary going after Shelley upon hearing Henry is leaving, or Henry leaving after hearing Gary went after Shelley? Inquiring minds want to know. Thanks for all the time and dedication you put into keeping us informed on all things Aggies.

I think this has been discussed, but Henry left because Shelley was brought in. Henry was not otherwise leaving.

I know there has been speculation but never knew if it was any more than that. Has this story been confirmed?

My theory is that Colombi was planning on staying because he was a great Aggie and was going to start but had also been talking to Wells/Yost because people don’t just delete phone numbers, and probably had an unofficial offer or at least some misgivings about how he could be playing in a Big 12 program. Gary needed another QB and when Shelley reached out there was really no reason to say no, I don’t believe he was promised anything but a shot. But Colombi suddenly saw it as an opportunity to get out and still be the good guy so he took it. I thought of this before the season started but now in hindsight I’m thinking Colombi probably also saw some coaching and locker room issues that made the decision even easier. Just a theory. Zero inside knowledge.

I’d have to go dig through old posts to be sure, but I think aggies22 himself put to bed the theory that Henry would have left otherwise.

If Henry’s plan was to follow Wells, he was about a year too late timing-wise. I also don’t think he is even on scholarship at Texas Tech.

When all this went down I left a pretty lengthy post about how it all went down. What's done is done but to put it shortly, consider that brief explanation all the confirmation you need. You can always PM if you'd like to discuss it further my Aggie brother!

You’re good, Aggies22! Just a theory I’ve had running around my head trying to make sense of all this. I guess I’ve missed a bunch of posts on this somewhere.

I think Columbi had a nice but possibly short run as starter at Tech. He was replaced by former starter Bowman later in yesterday's game, who then led the Red Raiders to a comeback victory. Bowman has the greater upside, bigger arm, and is only a sophomore. I hope I'm wrong but I'd be surprised if Columbi sees the field much more this season unless Bowman gets injured again.

Something no one has ever brought up is that Gary was looking for a QB to transfer in before Shelley. As I understand it, they thought they were going to get Noah Vedral to transfer but then he went to Rutgers. This was in the spring from what I understand.

Why wouldn't Colombi leave? Colombi from what I could see did a lot right- he was supportive of the prior starter- and then Gary decided to recruit over him. That to me is clear writing on the wall of where Gary's head was at in regards to the QB position.

The difference between Vedral and Shelley is, Noah Vedral was as senior grad transfer that had immediate eligibility. It's my understanding that bringing him made no difference to the Colombi camp. At worst, Henry would have had to wait his turn one more year. Which he would have done. Jason Shelley was a junior transfer that HAD to have his waiver APPROVED in order for him to be eligible to compete in 2020. Colombi and Shelley are both juniors.

I don’t know if Colombi would ever come back. I wish he would because I was dying to see him tear it up as an Aggie. Maybe if Texas Tech decides not to offer him a scholarship after the season, which is unlikely I would think, and he knows there’s a scholarship at USU for him, there might be a chance, but I honestly don’t think so. He seems like he fits in Lubbock, and has been pretty decent so far. Glad to see him succeed.

Thanks for the color aggies22, I had been told that Colombi didn’t seem to have a problem with the Vedral recruitment but your context crystallized why that was. What is then upsetting to me is that the official who told me about this episode was using it to paint Henry in a bad light as in “he didn’t have a problem when we were bringing in the kid from Nebraska but then suddenly had a problem with Shelley” they left out the junior/senior context.

No you won't ever know the truth, because most on here don't really want to know what is, and has been going on behind the scenes. I was told months ago that GA was going to crash and burn this go around, that he wasn't even close to being the same coach as he was in his first stint.

Vedral would have been... pretty bad too it appears.

With all the position groups that needed to be shored up, it makes no sense that they were looking at another QB even in the spring.

GA 2.0 really struggled to both identify team needs and to evaluate talent to fill needs.
