Our offense was terrible when Chico was our OC. No thanks.

Canales was never our OC. C'mon man. If you are going to be dismissive at least have correct facts.
I stand corrected. He was the assistant head coach in 2016. I had it in my mind he was OC. Was he let go by Wells or did he just move on?

2016 was a bad year. 3-9 (same as canales overall head coaching record) Not a good look to be assistant head coach that year in our worst season since 2008.

Ridiculous to pretend that is a factor. Coach 35 years. Arrive at a new school as a position coach no less, and the that year's record is on you? Silly. Really disappointed in the lack of intelligent conversation regarding this subject. I expected more.

It certainly isnt on him, but it isn't a good luck when you come in and it is the worst year for the program in 12 years. There are just many other coaches that would excite me a lot more.

I saw Chico coach in the Gator Bowl when he was at North Carolina State. I thought that he called one of the best offensive
games that that I had ever seen. He had a lot of offensive weapons including Phillip Rivers. They just destroyed Notre Dames defense. At that time I thought he would make it as head coach and be very successful. Since then he has not had the same talent and has only coached average offenses. It just goes to show that great players make Great Coaches. I am wondering
if the same will be said with Coach Yost that Jordan Love made him a great Coach and it will be hard for him to replicate his time at USU

I'm not sure Yost will be a head coach, but he's had a lot more than Love tired to his name. Yost coached Brad Smith, Chase Daniel, Blaine Gabbert and Justin Hebert in addition to Love.

There was a reason our offense improved after he was gone and Yost came in.
Canales wasn’t the OC at USU. Not a true comparison. He was a position coach.
Chico is on my list..........#436. :thanks:
Pretty dismissive. Where would you rank yourself in your own field based on that criteria?
My point is simply...under no circumstances would I want to have Chico as our head coach.
How would I rank myself in my own field? I am retired.
#436? If you had a reason to be dismissive that would make that something other than a lazy cheap shot. Show me a candidate with more experience? Saban or Whittingham is not going to take the job. Canales played against Whittingham, so age can't be a factor unless you think they would let Whit go because of it.
Hartwell is looking for an up and comer. Canales is hardly that. I can tell you now that YES, Canales has a lot of experience. But not a lot of good experience. He has worked at dozens of jobs, most of which he only stayed 1 to 3 years. No one wants that in a head coach. Sorry. I have been on a selection committee for USU football head coach. I can promise you that anyone with Chico's kind of a resume would have been eliminated right off the bat. Maybe rating him #436 in my book was a little drastic, so for you I will move him up to #435.

Glad you’re retired, as you are probably to blame for bad hires. Poor assessment. Ignorant observation how how things move in the coaching world. Not good experience? Really weak. You would be a loser by that criteria. Pretty *ickish too.

I hope we are thorough enough that we dont off hand eliminate anyone simply because they are a current assistant, moved around too much, or had bad years as a coordinator. It is great to look for an up and coming coach and I hope that is what we get. Tthe greatest learning often comes from mistakes and failures and whoever shows up here next will have to deal with some adversity to get this turned around. Hopefully they have had good life lessons that prepare them.

I don't know, your post directed at McAggie was kind of douchey. Reality is we all have different opinions and as passionate Aggie fans we don't want a hire that will set the program back like our last one did. If Canales was given the job, I will support him and judge him fairly like I did with Gary's second stint even though I didn't support the hire. I just think there are other guys that would be better.

No thank you and no I don't think this will happen anyway.

I am optimistic we'll have a good coach come in next who will succeed. We know it can happen and we know what to watch for since it hasn't been 40-50 years since we last were any good.

We should go for kent Baer. How often do you get a chance to hire a former Notre Dame head coach?

It raises an interesting question though: why can't a CV native (Baer) and Aggie alum with a strong coaching resume get a job here?

I think KB should have got a shot at some point. But that time has passed. KB is nearly 70. And dealing with major health issues. I hope he is able to keep fighting and wins this battle. KB is a great guy and I don't want to lose any Aggie greats.

I didn't expect everyone to agree with me. Don't reprimand me after the way you started this. Saying that the most qualified and experienced candidate in the nation willing to take this job, who is an Aggie, is choice three hundred and something without any intellectual reasoning makes it just a smart a$$ response. Then to have someone else compare folks who'd like to see a candidate who played at USU as "flies to a turd" is insulting. So why would I think I would have some intelligent comments or thoughts on this board? I guess that is my bad. To eliminate a coach based on being at multiple locations shows a lack of basic understanding of how the college coaching world works. I guess I expected more from folks on this board. If Canales is not worthy of serious consideration then you are saying there is no Aggie with 30 plus years of experience worth your time. Just intellectually lazy.

I would be stunned if Canales were interviewed. As has been said, Hartwell will go after an up and comer.

IMO, turnover is a big deal, and would be a dealbreaker for me in his case, at least for a HC position. He’s been around 35 years in and out of about 12 different programs. No thanks.

Again lack of a basic understanding of the college coaching position. Sadly ignorant. If you wish to go into college coaching you will move all over the country and hope to catch a wave of a winner. Then if you do, you MIGHT stay at the same place more than 4 years. By this silly eliminating issue for those who hold onto it, you are eliminating EVERYONE with experience in the industry. There is no one in the nation with 30 years of experience who would meet this ridiculous standard. Let alone someone who would consider USU. Urban Meyer? No bounced too much. Nick Saban? Oh he'll consider USU. Silly.

Experience has to account for something. Again there is no one in the nation with more college coaching experience who dreams of being the head coach of USU. He is an up and comer with a great deal of enthusiasm and experience. If you are going to eliminate someone because he's 58, then you must think Pete Carroll who is a decade older can't coach also. He just signed an extension.

I like Chico, but he is not the person for the job. Carroll got an extenaion because he has been an effective coach for the the last 20+ years.

An up in coming coach, by definition does not have 30 years of experience.

I don’t care if someone dreams of coaching at USU, I’ll take someone like Craig Smith over a 30 year career coach any day of the week, and twice on a Saturday night.

I really like Coach Smith. We'll enjoy him for one more season, then he's gonzo for huge money. We'll see then if you wish we had someone stay. Up and coming is the phrase. So what is the magic age that you start to eliminate coaches? Silly. If Canales gets the program rollin' he wouldn't be off for the first big money offer. If he turns it around he would stay for a decade.

As I said, I don’t think he will be considered so it’s a moot point. Time will tell.

If Craig Smith is hired away, it means we were pretty damn good this year, and that he treated us to three really damn good seasons. You can live with that.

And then if you make another great hire, the program keeps rolling and your school hopefully makes more money + gets more donors and you can pay the subsequent coaches more.
