He has been talked about each time we have had an opening.

Why has he not been seriously considered before? Just timing?

Yeah him and Kent Baer always seem to be talked about by somebody for the job.

Why so many quick stops over his career? I know coaches move around a lot, but there seem to be a ton of 1-2 year stints.

There was a reason our offense improved after he was gone and Yost came in.

Canales wasn’t the OC at USU. Not a true comparison. He was a position coach.

Yes that is how it works in the assistant coaching business. Just like here staffs are always on the move. Coaches always getting fired and new staffs giving promotions. Always getting picked up by a HC somewhere is a pretty good measurement of how he’s valued.

Yep. Because we hired a coach 25 years ago from Weber and he wasnt good has no basis on whether we should hire jay hill.

Hill recruits well enough to run smash mouth against FCS. And is creative enough against teams, like FBS teams, that he can't run smash mouth against.

I'm not sold his style of ground and pound offense will translate to FBS football. You need HORSES up front in the trenches for smash mouth ball and we don't have linemen that can pound the ball 40 times a game. His staff doesn't have enough FBS quality coaches either. So I would question if he has the connections to put together a quality staff. I keep seeing people say we need to recruit Utah. Why?? The top 20 guys all go to P5 schools or byu. We'll always take 5 or 6 guys but landing anyone inside the top 15 or 20 will always be a challenge for us.

You absolutely need to recruit the state of Utah. Not only do we have a lot of quality D1 football players here, but it builds tremendous good will and even a larger fan base over time. Players from the state also seem to have a higher level of ownership in the program. We have tried the out of state model with very limited success. You can’t get all your players from Utah to be sure, but you shouldn’t minimize or downplay their importance short and long term.

I didn't say we wouldn't. I know the state of Utah will always be recruited by Utah State. I simply question why some of you state the next Head Coach MUST be able to recruit Utah. We could find higher rated guys outside the state and probably have a better chance of landing them.

I'm not sure the argument about in-state guys being more vested in the program fits either. I've seen more out-of-state guys come back for spring ball and home games in recent years.

I do see your point however and respect your opinion my Aggie brother.

That wasn't directed at you. Some have used arslanian as a knock against hill which is insane. I know your reasoning against hill is different.

These are some of my concerns as well. He may be able to make the jump, but i do worry about the ability to put together a solid group of FBS coaches. I just hope Hartwell makes the best decision.

Assistant there for a bit. Only head coaching job was at north texas. He coached 12 games at north texas as the interim over 2 different stints with a 3-9 record.

He would have more money to hire FBS coaches here than at Weber. I would agree that I would hope he doesn't just bring up his entire current staff. Maybe there are a few guys he lost from Weber to either other FCS schools or lower tier G5 schools that he would then be able to take back if he came here. Kind of like how Gary lost Chad K. from here to Utah. But then at Wisconsin, he was able to take him back.

Carroll is 69. Canales is 58 and full of energy. Lame reason to dismiss Canales.

Experience should account for something. No one is more experienced. And certainly no one also has this as his dream job with this level of experience.

I stand corrected. He was the assistant head coach in 2016. I had it in my mind he was OC. Was he let go by Wells or did he just move on?

This feels like a critical hire. We are at a bit of a crossroads as a program. I just don't want to settle. If he is the best candidate for the job great, but I don't want to hire someone because this is their "dream job" or they are "an Aggie through and through." I am not saying that is the case here, but it makes me a bit nervous.

There are a few names that always pop up with every opening, but have never been hired. That makes me nervous.

Canales went from USU to an SEC job at Tennessee. The HC was fired the next season. He was then hired as the UTEP OC. Again there is no candidate in the nation with more D1 coaching experience than Canales who has USU as his dream job or would consider USU.

He was also a part of the creation of the U of South Fla program from scratch. He was a major cog in that build. And it looks like we are at ground zero here again.

#436? If you had a reason to be dismissive that would make that something other than a lazy cheap shot. Show me a candidate with more experience? Saban or Whittingham is not going to take the job. Canales played against Whittingham, so age can't be a factor unless you think they would let Whit go because of it.
