Coaching Candidates

Post by Aggie84025 » November 7th, 2020, 12:06 pm

I thought i would start a thread about who we think are legitimate coaching candidates or who you would like to see get an interview. Mine in no particular order. I also don't know a lot of coordinators at other schools. Want someone who is a great motivator, recruiter and innovator.

-Jay Hill
-Brent Brennan
-Jeff Grimes
-An up and coming FCS coach or solid FBS coordinator.

Can't we just have Craig Smith coach football too?

Not saying Jeff Grimes is the direction to go, but a person has to be impressed with how he has transformed BYU's offense. That is an exciting offense to watch.

None of the above will be the new coach. I am not saying they should not get the job but they will not. Jay Hill very well may be a good possible hire, but I doubt he was much of a chance. Did Jay even get a interview last time out ?

Grimes has really grown into his oc position, and it would demoralize the crap out of BYU. Plus they owe us for Lavelle. Bonus: without Grimes, Sitake regresses to the mean.

And on top of that, if Sitake regresses below his mean and they let him go, they would NOT be able to hire Grimes back as Head coach.

For the Jay Hill folks on there. I need to be sold on him. Not saying I don't want him but I am saying I don't understand why so many on here love him.

Why him over Yost, Zak Hill, Rich Rod, Helfrich or anyone. Brian Johnson is going to get a shot at some point. ( too early I think for us )

I feel the same with Jay Hill. I know he has trasnformed Weber, but aside from that I am not familiar with him, but would like to hear from others their opinion. I don't think Yost is the answer, he just does not seem to be head coaching material.

I think we have to have someone with Head Coach experience of some sort.

I agree we need someone with head coach experience. Jay has built Weber into a very impressive FCS school. He knows the Utah HS landscape and has local connections.

He’s known as an excellent recruiter I’ve heard it mentioned several times on the radio the high level of recruiter he is.

He makes a ton of sense to me.

Jay has Weber competing for national championships not just winning. He also understands our culture and I think he would serve well as our Head Coach.

Jay Hill's Weber offense got shut down twice last year by Montana. Montana DC is Kent Bear.

You are missing the point. My point was success at that level does not guarantee or translate to success at this level.
San Jose State hired a guy that was competing for national championships on that level and he ran a top 25 team into the ground and got fired in 4 years

How about the coastal Carolina or liberty coach? The Marshall coach has brought success.

Ron Caragher won at San Diego when nearly anyone would have with what Jim Harbaugh built, which sounds like Mick Dennehy winning at Montana when anyone would have. Jim Harbaugh winning at San Diego, while it was hard to win there, is more similar to Jay Hill.

I agree with this. Except comparison between Harbaugh and Hill is a stretch. I am saying that Jay Hill would be no farther ahead than Frank or Yost or Grimes...
Hell maybe we reach out to Rocky Long. He is from Provo. Left SDSU because of administration. Maybe he would be interested .

Rich Rod and Helfrich are not on my list. No fired P5 guys. Up and comers only please.

Grimes and Jay Hill would be on my list of interviewees. If we go older, Rocky Long is intriguing.

Guess that rules out Harbaugh after losing to Illinois today. :) Actually I couldn't root for that guy if he took the job pro bono.

Don’t count Frank out. He’ll have the chance to show what he can do with games this season and will get an interview.

What would be your wins requirement over the final 5 to give Frank the job?
