If he has the quarterback he will throw it around. I know Fritz isn't popular but be familiar with the name Will Hall because when he gets his shot at a D1 job, he will be successful. Will Hall was just named the new HC at Southern Miss.

Wasn't aware of that. He will be successful there. He's a great coach and an even better recruiter.

This coaching search is an absolute mess! This is what happens when the AD refuses to give any information at all, you have a bunch of speculation. At least like an update on how it’s going and when he plans to have this wrapped up would be nice, but nothing at all is extremely frustrating.

I didn’t follow the ins and outs of the Craig Smith hire- was his name leaked before he was hired or did we only hear his name after he was hired?

How do you know the search is a mess if the AD hasn't given any information?

Perhaps I didn’t phrase that very well. All this speculation from all these people, is a mess. Idk how the search is going but I’m getting tired of hearing something different every day from different people who all have totally different answers then other people.

It hasn't seemed to bad to me. Regarding that info from KSL that Harrell didn't interview. I'd be willing to bet that's purposely being put out by USU to save face.

Welcome to an internet fan board where most everyone knows nothing and the very few that do are still speculating based on the bits and pieces they know. Throw in the trolls and the 3rd and 4th hand information too. It is no different anywhere else.

Doesn't seem that way to me either if you don't go looking at "sources" that have zero credibility.

Speculation is a good source of entertainment, but that's all it is. I'm sure our AD has a sense of urgency to get the right guy here as soon as possible, but I'd be willing to bet there are names on his shortlist who's primary focus is keeping their current players healthy and finishing up this season before getting too wrapped up in interviews and negotiations.

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if an announcement isn't made until mid-way through bowl season or possibly after. IMO the longer Hartwell and Cockett have to do their due diligence is a good thing. We'll get our answer when the ink is dry.

I don't get how it's a mess. Is it because the AD hasn't told us his list or who he plans on hiring? Doesn't make sense to me, but I'm a bit slow.

Finally some news! Sean Lewis and Willie Fritz are kind of surprising to me.
I'll say this. I have been told names that HAVE interviewed that are NOT on that list. I have NEVER heard the names of Fritz
or Grimes in my conversations. I'm not sure how correct this dude is?
Agreed, take this list with a grain of salt.....
Whew! That is good news because this looks like a Tier 2 list of candidates....meaning all Tier 1 options are off the table.

Willie Fritz actually looks like a solid candidate. Being competitive at Georgia Southern and Tulane are not the easiest of tasks. Seems like a good candidate.

I'd be fine with Willie Fritz, although many would complain about his offense.

It does look like he runs the ball almost twice as much as he throws...not sure how I feel about that.

I know I’m the only one but it feels to me Hartwell is bumbling and stumbling along at a snails pace like he’s just incapable of making a decision. Any decision.

But I know he walks on water around here so save all your outrage.

I don't care about Fritz O. I do care that he doesn't have a particularly impressive w/l record anywhere except Sam Houston State where they are institutionally excellent over the years similar to Boise at their level. He has done nothing special without that and that isn't our situation...yet

We'll see who he ends up with. I'll reserve judgement until then, but I agree the process has not been as quick as I would have liked. If we end up hiring Jay Hill, it will feel as if we wasted a month.

It’s a sample size of 1 and that’s assuming we give him a complete pass on GA 2.0.

I don’t 1 hire is a great track record. It’s an incomplete track record.

Anyone know if this is true sounds like Jim Mora also may have turned down the HC job.
I've talked to several different credible sources and I've never heard Jim Mora's name mentioned.
I'm curious 22, of the people you've heard who have been interviewed, are they're any head-scratchers? Any big-name guys or people who surprised to have shown interest? Or has it been par for the course thus far? If you can't share specifics, that's fine - just want your general take. Thanks.
There hasn't been any guys that I would consider big name with the exception of Harrell and Dillingham. The retreads don't excite me and the usual suspects are lateral moves. The one name that surprised me was Skip Holtz. The head scratchers are the stupid $hit this KSL dude keeps posting.

If you are confused it's because you believe way too much of what you read on the internet.

I suspect it's only a mess to those who think they are entitled to know what is happening... and don't.

The rest of us are just waiting to hear and trusting our administration.

I don't think it's that people think JH walks on water. I believe it may be that people are ok on waiting to see how this plays out before being upset. Each of us may have a different image of how we would like to see things play out and that's based off zero experience of hiring a head football coach at the D1 level.

He does not walk on water for me, but I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and allow him time to get the person who he thinks is best. I am with you in not liking to wait. I am a person who makes decisions really fast once I have all the information i need. Sometimes it has worked out really well for me, other times I wish I had more patience.

For whatever reason, we know that JH has applied for some other AD jobs, particularly those in the south part of the country.
He knows, that if he aspires to move up the ranks to a larger more visible program, he cannot screw up this hire.
There are two things an AD will be judged by, improved facilities and Coaching hires.
He needs this for himself......so perhaps instead of going with a young gun without head coaching experience, he will go with a more mature, older, experienced man who has had experiences of being a D1 coach.
He wants to look out for number one.... he is built that way

I agree with everything you just said, except the older more experienced part.
He parlayed his hire of Neal Brown at Troy for the USU job. He was probably pretty damned close to getting Harrell which would have been the ticket to an ACC or SEC job.
Dillingham would be the next best thing if he followed his previous model. Way more interesting, sexy, etc... than say a lance Leipold or Skip Holtz type. And certainly much more so than a solid hire like Jay Hill.

JH looking out for himself and looking out for Utah State are one and the same. He's only successful if we're successful. Also, I don't believe that JH is only looking out for himself anyway. It's possible to want to build your own resume while you genuinely care about building the program you work for. This pervasive idea that ADs and coaches don't care about the places they work and are only in it for themselves just doesn't ring true for the vast majority that have come through here. I think they all care about the kids, the program, the fans and the place even if they're only here for a short time.

Have you ever watched Hartwell at a game? I would say he's pretty invested.....

He needs this for himself......so perhaps instead of going with a young gun without head coaching experience, he will go with a more mature, older, experienced man who has had experiences of being a D1 coach.
He wants to look out for number one.... he is built that way
Yikes, that doesn't instill much confidence.

This coaching search is an absolute mess! This is what happens when the AD refuses to give any information at all, you have a bunch of speculation. At least like an update on how it’s going and when he plans to have this wrapped up would be nice, but nothing at all is extremely frustrating.
How do you know the search is a mess if the AD hasn't given any information?
Perhaps I didn’t phrase that very well. All this speculation from all these people, is a mess. Idk how the search is going but I’m getting tired of hearing something different every day from different people who all have totally different answers then other people.
Welcome to the wonderful world of USU FANS. Get used to it.

Whats the hurry. There are only 4 division 1 coaching vacancies. Vanderveldt will get the first choice with the money
they have to spend. The other programs looking for coaches only pay in the 500k range. From a money standpoint we should be attractive. We should be able to find and Hire a good coach whether it is a coordinator or a proven winner from a smaller
school.
Regarding recruiting this year is unique. I have read that this year there may only be 60-70% of the scholarships available for
High School recruits because college students will not lose a year of eligibility. It is projected that a lot of HS student will have to enroll in Junior College because there will not be enough scholarships to go a round. I believe that there will be a lot of
good players available for the late signing period and then if we look at players from the portal we should be ok.
Just my thoughts

Oh, don't worry. John Hartwell is no NO hurry.

I'm guessing you were the kind of kid who would try to sneak around and open his presents before Christmas.

I'm as excited as the next guy to find out who we hire, but it's December 7 and we still have a game to play this weekend. I think it would have been weird to make an announcement this week or last. I'm actually struggling to think of a single example of a time when a school made a HC hire mid-season.

I agree. I think it’s better to announce the hire after regular season ends. I anticipate we’ll see an announcement on Sunday unless it’s someone like Leipold, Chadwell, or Napier, who will be coaching in conference championships the following weekend. Of which only Leipold is really a candidate.
