Frank would be the 2nd coach in a row that no one else in the country would hire as their head coach but I am sure we are smarter than everyone else.
Yeah, can we please put emotion aside and hire the best coach available? We have done the emotional hire for guys that nobody else wanted 3 times since 2015 in basketball and football. The first 2 didn't work out. I am guessing 3rd time won't be the charm. The time we just went out and hired the best guy recently was Craig Smith and it was the right decision.
You think Hartwell is making an emotional decision here? I don’t. He’s earned my trust after he hired Craig Smith.
This. If Hartwell hires Frank it will be because he's gained his trust as a coach. Maile has a lot going for him just starting with his understanding of how USU needs to be recruited with the poly and missionary pipelines. He's demonstrated guts and good judgment so far from what I can see. If this team puts up strong competitive performances on both sides of the ball with the youth and losses they have incurred these last two games it would be really big risk not to hire Frank IMO. On the other hand if NM was a fluke and the team struggles scheme and motivation wise then the opposite is probably true.

I may be the only one on here to hope that Hartwell lets the next two games play out before he makes a final decision. Because without any info other than the news out of the program, the games, and this board I have been really impressed with how he's handled things to date. And I am not a fan of Maile's job as a coordinator or defensive playcaller. But as the guy in charge he is winning me over.

But I'm gonna trust Hartwell on this one. After all I was a fan of Gary's return...lol

Frank getting lauded for the bowl game seems like a little stretch. I mean, that team was STACKED. I think I could have coached them to victory over North Texas
So how come people aren't dismissive of Yost's success with that same team? Yost has been pretty average otherwise.

And yet the team is playing the best it's played all year without them 🤔

I am hopeful Hartwell makes the best hire. It is crucial we get the best coach we can so we can get this turned around.
You mean the best hire that isn’t Frank.

I love Frank, I just don't think he is the best person for the job. I obviously don't know much about football, but I truly believe we can get a better, well rounded candidate than what Frank has to offer. If we hire Frank I will 100% support him, but I do believe we would be selling our self short with that hire.

I agree with this, AF is such a unique team from anyone else we play this game will tell a lot. If we come out and get throttled like last year especially on defense I would be even more concerned with Maile taking over the reins. If we come out and have a really good game plan and play well against the option it would be a big feather in Maile's cap.

Win or lose the last two games, I still don't see how Frank is a better candidate than Jay Hill.

If Frank is able to beat AF and CSU, I would not mind seeing him get hired. Turning a complete dumpster fire season into an ok or even mediocre season is impressive.

After hearing him speak to the team before the NM game in one of the highlight videos, he SOUNDS like a winning coach. It made me see a side of him I didn’t know was there. He sounded like a guy who could implement a winning culture.

With that said he still needs to win. And no matter what I trust Hartwell on any hire he decides is best for the program.

Yeah, if he can win out I’d be okay with hiring Frank.

I don’t think you can judge frank on these games much as I would suspect most of the coordinators would be gone if he is the head coach.

One of my biggest fears with hiring coach Maile would be what kind of staff could he get around him. Does he have the connections to put together a solid staff? I don't have the answer to that. I wonder what type of offensive strategy he would try to implement? If we truly go with a local guy that has big ties to the state I think Jay Hill makes more sense since he has actually led a program and turned it around.

If Frank is hired I could see Collins staying if he were given the DC job. Who is our acting OC anyway? Reeder or Schramm? Could see Schramm stay and be OC if he is indeed the acting OC and he puts some great stuff together for AF and CSU. Both those guys are hungry to get/keep coordinator positions. Not saying they are our best options but I don’t think they’d necessarily leave.

Yeah I’d be curious what kind of staff he could put together. I wonder who really hired Yost. Hartwell or wells? Even if it was Wells I bet he got hartwells blessing.

So Schramm as OC, Collins as DC?

Yikes. If that's the best Frank could come up with, his tenure as HC would be short lived. (I'm not saying it would be. I have no idea)

Well yes, that's obvious. We don't any of these people. We only know them through media interviews and viewing their actions and words from afar. How many really know Craig Smith, John Hartwell, Gary Andersen, Matt Wells? How many Utah fans know KW? Kalani Sitake? Etc.

Schram was a good OC for Fresno. Then he was made a scape goat and fired by a bad HC who was fired a year later.

Wondering, is Favero involved much? I still see him listed on the website but don't hear much about how he's involved, if at all.

The 2018 team that beat North Texas was arguably our best team in 50 years. And beating North Texas isn’t exactly a marquee win.

In it’s last 20 (TWENTY!) MW conference games, New Mexico was won exactly ZERO games. ZERO! 0-20.

I sure as hell hope winning those two games is not the standard by which we pick a new head football coach. And Maile hasn’t set the world on fire as a coordinator either. I really don’t understand how one could decide to risk the future of our program on the HOPE that he could become a good head coach. I think we need EVIDENCE of success before handing the reins to someone. I haven’t been totally excited by the prospects of hiring someone like a Jay Hill but if you put the two resumes next to each other, it’s a no brainer. Trying to be as objective as possible, I just don’t see how Maile is even close.

By all accounts, he’s a great guy. I would hate to lose him from our program. And maybe he’ll even turn out to be an excellent head coach somewhere (I hope for his sake that he does). But for me, there is just nowhere near enough evidence to decide to make him our head coach right now. Wishful thinking isn’t going to cut it. We’re already living with the results of wishful thinking from the last head coach hire.

The funniest thing about the discussion on here regarding Frank is that people will condemn the potential hire (nothing is done yet, could honestly not be Frank in the end) after the whole AD and search committee have done all they have done so far to make recommendations and review needs. Keep in mind also, that the condemnation is happening while admitting to know very little about the process, who's been involved, and what was presented from each candidate. Oh yeah, also keep in mind that this is happening before any official recruiting classes have been signed and any games have been played. Bravo!

I am interested in who all the candidates have interviewed are? I realize the AD is wanting to keep it tight to the vest, but to not have any reports on who has been interviewed etc. makes the board go wild.

Lot's of good logic here.

I am interested in who all the candidates have interviewed are? I realize the AD is wanting to keep it tight to the vest, but to not have any reports on who has been interviewed etc. makes the board go wild.
This, lost opportunity to build some excitement around your product.
I disagree.

Making a list of candidates known is a good way to get a fan base divided into camps supporting potential coaches - most of whom will not be hired. It will only serve to inject external emotion into the process which could eventually undermine the support for the ultimate selection. It turns it into a political process, rather than a critical evaluation.

Interesting opinion, I've always though that good, well intentioned debate should always be part of the process. It also makes boards like this more enjoyable.
