Luckily, the last name is spelled differently.

Yes, Swede's versus Dane's. Big difference!

Another interesting one I heard but would be a bit cavalier. ( but wont happen IMHO)
Young 40 yr old current DC at a P5
Ton of family around here and is a damn good guy.

[/quote]

You guys totally missed this one. He has to be talking about Nick Howell, current DC at Virginia (Cavaliers). He actually coached one year at Sky View. Interesting

I also wouldn’t mind Lance Anderson.

I know nothing about Nick Howell other than looking at his coaching profile. Bronco is an awesome defensive coach. I wonder how much of the success Howell has experienced as DC is due to Bronco being heavily involved versus him just being a really good coach.

For those who remember the last coaching search, I was trolling hard for Lance Anderson. Aside from the other positives people have mentioned, he is Stanford's top recruiter for Utah. Stanford has been getting more top recruits from Utah than Utah has in recent years, and Anderson is the reason for that. And he grew up in southern Idaho, so he has strong family ties to the area and might consider a job at USU even if he has to take a pay cut (which I'm guessing he would). He is also LDS, which definitely won't hurt recruiting missionaries and other local players. (To be clear, I don't think that being LDS should be a requirement or even a consideration. But being familiar with local culture/missions will help a bit.) He was (and probably still is) head coach in waiting at Stanford, so I don't know if he would want to give that up for USU. But Stanford has fallen back to earth in recent years, so it is looking less likely that David Shaw gets called up to the NFL. Maybe he is getting tired of waiting for David Shaw to move on and might consider some other head coaching jobs. I hope Hartwell has called him at the bare minimum.

Nick Howell from North Ogden and graduated from Ben Lomond? He was rubbish when he got promoted way over his head at BYU and I don't know if he'd be the answer.

Chris's (Toph) dad Stewart was the head baseball coach at Logan High
Nick's dad Roger was the head baseball coach at Ben Lomond.
Stu and Rodger are brothers. And both grew up in Cache Valley

Roger and Stu both were assistant football coaches

Roger coached Aggie great Emmett white in football and baseball

How about the coastal Carolina or liberty coach? The Marshall coach has brought success.
Liberty coach is Hugh Freeze ... Not sure I want that
High Freeze would be an awesome hire! But who's going to write the $2,000,000.00 check?

Why would he be awesome. He got fired twice for NCAA violations. Paying players and lack of institutional control

And he's going to be hired by South Carolina because the SEC doesn't care about that stuff as long as you can win apparently

An interesting little tidbit on Lance Anderson. a few years ago USU and Stanford were recruiting one of the Fehoko brothers who at the time was considered one of the best players in the State. He had an arrangement with our coaching staff that if he couldn't meet Stanford's academic requirements he would try to steer him in the aggies direction. He was actually in the Jim and Carol Laub building on a Saturday morning when the Fehoko athlete was taking his official visit to USU. He met with him for about 10 minutes and then was on his way. This was with USU approval.
This just showed me that he was good at what he did. It turned out the player was accepted academically and lance got his man

Yeah hugh freeze will be in the sec again and good riddance. We should have at least some degree of moral standards. We can find a good person who is also a good coach. Most coaches are good people.

And I didn't realize this until I looked up his resume, but Anderson coached the linebackers at USU in 2004. So he has at least some ties to Logan (in addition to family ties to southern Idaho). I still don't think it is likely that he gives up "head coach in waiting" title at Stanford to come to USU, but I don't think it is totally crazy to think he might. Like I said, I hope Hartwell at least gives him a call to see if there is any interest.

Canales has some pretty amazing contacts from multiple spots in the nation. He has recruited heavily in SEC country. He has transfers ready to come if he gets the job. He's coached in the SEC, ACC, MWC, NFL, and knows his stuff. He would also have a pretty impressive staff very quickly. He's ready he's been groomed to do this for 30 plus years. Not a more impressive resume in the nation, who is wiling to come to USU.

I am not flaming here, genuinely curious, with 30 years in coaching and aspirations to be head coach why do you think he's never been tapped as full time head coach?

He was the interim head coach 2 different times at North Texas. Retained both times. Well respected through the coaching world with some pretty amazing contacts. Not sure he had had interest at being a head coach at a lower level and has wished to do it at the D1 level.

I had a brief email conversation with Coach Conales back before the Gary Andersen 1.0 hire and he was very interested in the USU job at that time and applied for it. I was a big proponent of Chico at that time but I think our program has grown since then and I'm not convinced he's the best option we have now. He's been coaching bad teams for the past decade plus.

I do love to see passionate former Aggies on our staff. I was wondering what kind of staff we could put together if it was made up completely of former Aggies.

Just thought of this. Maybe he isn't ready for head coach job at D1 level yet but it'd be interesting to hire on Anthony Calvillo as either OC or QB coarch/Passing coordinator. The former Aggie has been doing some coaching since he ended his illustrious career in the CFL (all-time leading passer). He's currently the OC for the Université de Montréal Carabins and was an assistant for the Alouettes and Argos for a time as well so he has done some coaching. I love the Canadian game and think he could bring some innovation to the playbook. Coaches like Joe Tiller, Mike Riley, and Marv Levy (NFL) cut their teeth in the CFL and developed some great offenses based off of some things they learned in the more wide-open CFL.

So in order for the wheels to even have a risk of falling off you must be insinuating that the wheels are already in motion with a coaching candidate (or several) that you perceive to be better qualified than either Hill or Choate.

Ok, you have our attention. Any hints at who of that caliber you've heard are lining up for an interview?

He's implying there are some higher profile coaches in the discussion for the job.

Unless the wheels fall off neither Hill or Choate will be serous candidates.
Umm, have you like not watched a single game this year? The wheels fell off long ago! If that’s what you mean by wheels falling off. What exactly are you implying?
He's talking specifically about this coaching search. FYI, this search will be 100% different than a couple years ago. It's being played extremely close to the vest.

I can't wait to see this coach that Hartwell comes up with that outmatches the resume of Jay Hill.

IMO, the most important coaching resume builder is for a coach to take over a train wreck and then build it into a contender. Jay has done that.

Just a theory but I get the impression from Hartwell that there were some high quality candidates that expressed interest in the job last go around but he was forced into GA 2.0 before he could vet the process properly. Perhaps that's why he was anxious to pull the trigger and walk Gary out the door so soon now because he knows the level of candidate and splash hire we can get.
