Athletic Directors Should Resign
This is the fault of national and state leadership, not sports. ADs couldn't make idiots in Utah County wear masks.

Re: Athletic Directors Should Resign
I've seen little league and small city rec departments design and implement safety procedures and protocol pertaining to covid that they have worked on for the last 6 months. College athletic departments should be ashamed of themselves for the lack of planning to make football happen in a safe manner. Ridiculous.

Yep, it has been an incredible failure. Probably the biggest sports failure in history if all of college football is shutdown for the year.

Re: Athletic Directors Should Resign
Yes there has been failures beyond sports obviously, but what was the plan for college football? It seemed to just be hope and pray covid goes away. If nothing else, they should have been educating college football fans on what needed to happen for there to be a season. If they had no for sure plan to play, they should have at least informed people what they expected before playing. There was no leadership. it was just every few weeks there were more things cancelled or postponed.QuackAttackAggie wrote: ↑August 10th, 2020, 8:56 pmThis is the fault of national and state leadership, not sports. Basically no revenue with no decrease in some of the bigger cost buckets (employees and scholarships) isn’t a good recipe for success. Our AD is a smart dude when it comes to financials. However this kind of blow could be too big without minimizing some of your fixed cost.

I'm just glad here at Utah State we are concerned for the health and well being of our "student" athletes. The regular students can go #$$&_# yourselves and die of covid.

And how many college age students with no underlying health issues have died of covid? Are they supposed to hide in the basement until there are zero cases.

Athletes would have had to come back to campus, no? Whereas many unmarried students probably moved back with mom & dad and are taking the semester online- or are taking a leave of absence.
It would seem that now athletes have the same protection and options other students have.

My point is this has nothing to do with player safety. It's all a liability issue now.

Right- but IF we were to have a season athletes who wished to practice and compete would need to be in Logan. They would have to spend a significant amount of time not social distancing.Intermeddler wrote: ↑August 10th, 2020, 11:03 pmThey already had that option while remaining on scholarship.Imakeitrain wrote: ↑August 10th, 2020, 10:54 pmAthletes would have had to come back to campus, no? I wish athletes were able to do what they love too. I am just not convinced it’s a case of the university putting athletes “before” other students. (Although that does happen)

I really hope some conferences stick it out and it proves a success, but if it backfires at least we can still blame it on the wierdos in Utah County. Re: Athletic Directors Should Resign
It is astonishing to me that once the NCAA tournament was canceled that there wasn’t an urgent and thorough plan put in place for what would have to happen to preserve a football season. That conference commissioners and university presidents didn’t aggressively tackle the issue in a unified way is really pathetic.
The problem is no one is in charge of college football. There’s competing power structures with different constituencies and no one overcame that to fix the problem
I hope they don’t repeat the same mistake for November 2020 to March 2021 or we might be saying goodbye to another college basketball tournament

Re: Athletic Directors Should Resign
I am unsure what plans posters would have in mind to conduct a season. Play in empty stadiums like the NBA, MLB and the NHL or on empty golf courses like the PGA? Even if games were played absent fans the COVID testing of 100 players and staff would be expensive. The average cost of a test is $127. The NBA tests every player every other day. Do the math. Then there would be the uncertainty re: the shuffling that would be necessary when someone gets the disease.
I suspect the league and the schools have been in close contact on this matter for several months. Perhaps no plan has been developed (if, in fact, that’s the case) because there is no feasible way to economically conduct a season unless fans are present. And right now that doesn’t seem at all possible.

Re: Athletic Directors Should Resign
Apparently the other conferences were unaware that the Big 10 was going conference only when they announced that a few weeks ago so I don’t think the assumption that they’ve been working in concert is a good one. If there’s no feasible plan to be had why did conferences announce schedules over the last week to 10 days only to abort the plan now? Nothing material has changed in the last 10 days. In fact, cases appear to be on a slow decline.utaggies wrote: ↑August 11th, 2020, 12:53 amI am unsure what plans posters would have in mind to conduct a season. This all speaks to disorganization and lack of leadership. If there truly is no way to play the games that should have been made clear and the season canceled weeks ago rather than modified to conference only, then postponed, now spring. Whoever said their plan appears to be wait until the virus goes away is probably right.
What standards have been announced for when it is safe to play? What level of community spread? How many cases? An acceptable IFR? None of that has been discussed or hinted at publicly and every stakeholder is left twisting in the wind. Do we have to wait for 0 cases? A vaccine? Why will a spring season be any safer?

Re: Athletic Directors Should Resign
I didn’t say that. But even if television revenue was still possible under the circumstances — and I don’t know if that’s the case — if we didn’t play in front of any fans we lose $1.5 million in football ticket revenue. Plus we lose the $1.5 million for playing Washington. Add to that non-budgeted COVID testing costs and you are at a differential of 10% of our total athletic budget. How would that deficit be handled?AgMac wrote: ↑August 11th, 2020, 1:06 amPlease tell me your argument is not that we're financially better off cancelling the season.utaggies wrote: ↑August 11th, 2020, 12:53 amI am unsure what plans posters would have in mind to conduct a season. Re: Athletic Directors Should Resign
They had to cancel early enough to give the best players and coaches in the conference plenty of time to transfer to schools that will be playing this fall.
