2020 SP+ Projections

Post by Full » February 14th, 2020, 10:13 am

I haven’t seen this posted anywhere, but SP+ projections for next season were released. It paints an ugly season if it’s right.

Mountain West teams:
38. Boise
65. Air Force
74. SDSU
79. CSU
80. Wyoming
94. Fresno State
99. Hawaii
100. Utah State
108. San Jose
110. Nevada
121. UNLV
122. New Mexico

Other teams of note:
24. Washington
47. Washington State
53. BYU

My guess is that it predicts us at 4-8. I don’t buy it, but it is one of the better preseason polls available. I think a bowl game should be the expectation this year, so I’m not buying.

HUGE question marks along the defensive line and at linebacker are what is leading to this early season ranking. That and the loss of Jordan Love and outside of Logan not a lot of people know much about Henry Colombi.

I recognize it is too early at this point, but just out of curiosity, if you were to predict our record right now, what would you guess?

SP+ projected us as a Top 40 team last year in the preseason. It typically takes three to four weeks for SP+ to really focus in on how teams have changed from the previous season. Just as we dropped off last year, I would guess we will see a somewhat similar rise to the 60s/70s area this year.

It is much harder for SP+ to accurately predict G5 success on a year-to-year basis. That Top 25 area is typically golden though.

Yup S&P+ has a lot of questions about us. Losing a two and a half year starter at QB, our most of our DL and LB, the fact that last year was disappointing, and the fact that our recruiting is always bad, all contribute to our poor ranking.

I would guess 5-7 wins. I expect a big increase in our run game. Be interesting to see the change back in defense.

With last season being a trainwreck defensively, I expect a jump in turnovers and pressure on the opposing quarterback. We have HORSES at running back. I would like to see another WR and a DL added over the offseason unless I see things during spring ball that will change my mind. I think with both sides of the ball being in such disarray most of the season and we were still able to do as well as we did should be encouraging. Call me crazy but I see at least 8 wins.

If you only knew how much disarray was going on, its shocking. Glad some of them landed elsewhere.

I wish I could be that optimistic! WSU, W, BSU are probable losses. SUU and NM are probable wins. I put the rest in the toss up category. 5-7 maybe. Sell me on 3 more probable wins please!

Tough sell. Maybe Colorado State since they always find a way to choke when playing us.

Anything but something in the 4-8 to 7-5 range would shock me. 3-9 would shock me less than 8-4 would, unfortunately.

By always choke, does that include when we lost to them in 2014, 2016, and 2017?

True enough about COLOMBI,,,for the present. I suspect after next season many more will know about COLOMBI. I would also expect some off season team preparation, mental toughness conditioning and with a solid dose of G A work ethic will improve our 2020 outlook upward a couple of wins or so. I would expect a bowl game eligible team in 2020, and not a conference champion.

Our schedule is a rough one. Here are our road games:
@ Washington
@ BYU
@ CSU
@ Wyoming
@ Boise
@ Nevada

How many of those do we think we'll win? One? Two?

Then we have Washington State, SDSU and Air Force at home and they'll all be tough. Southern Utah and New Mexico are the only ones I expect to win for sure. We're likely to lose two home games. Maybe three.

If we get to a bowl game, we'll have done very well. We're going to need to be better than last year to do it.

I think we’ll actually be better than last year. Our scheme will be better and the coaches know better what they have. No doubt we’ll miss Love but I think Columbi will do better than most expect and we’ll be more of a threat to run from the QB position. Having another year of experience and strength training for our young Oline will help immensely.

I could see us going 5-1 (or maybe 4-2) at home and then 3-3 (or maybe 2-4) on the road. I expect 7-5 as the median with 6-6 or 8-4 as possibilities... and 8 wins being more likely than 6. I think year 2 of Anderson 2.0 will really be fun and we’ll see his personality shine through his players more. Then the following year (2021) is when we really flex and seriously challenge Boise.

If the hogs up front are ready to kick some A$$ next year we'll go bowling.
