Spring Game?

Post by NorCalAggie » February 11th, 2020, 11:08 am

Sorry if this has already been posted somewhere, but does anyone know the date of Spring Game? I heard Thursday April 9th, but don;t see it anywhere on the schedules.

A Thursday spring game? That sounds like an excellent decision to increase attendance.

Haha mine is the day after yours. Going to the spring game is usually my birthday gift to myself.

How does a Thursday make any sense for a spring game? Unless the goal is to not get many people to come to it. A regular season game I will for sure be there, but a Thursday for the spring game will be tough. It surely will not build any excitement for the upcoming season.

Perhaps the NCAA basketball tourney national championship trophy parade in Logan will be that Friday the 10th. Won't want to miss that! :)

It would still be a lot cooler to have the spring game on the 11th but I like where you're going with this one my Aggie brother!

I was naive enough to think that stupidity in the athletic department was limited to those in charge of marketing ticket sales, but apparently, shoving heads up one's backside to aid in making decisions has spread to the entire department. Hopefully, they are smart enough to use lubrication.

I get the frustration USUSports, but it may be a football coach based decision for some reason as well.

I live in Logan, so for me personally, it doesn’t really matter. However, when you think about the main reason for having a spring game, a weekday game makes no sense no matter who is making the decision. If the goal isn’t about fan support and generating excitement, then they might as well have another closed practice and skip the spring game. If it is about fan support and generating excitement, then why pick a weekday?

Are you sure someone in the AD office doesn’t know how to read a calendar properly???

I got my info from someone in the football office. Although I was told it's "tentative".

Well noted usu. Instead, we should just bag the spring game and lock the gates so no one will see, hear or experience the tradition and excitement of a SPRING FOOTBALL GAME. This is a very good idea to extinguish local ticket buying interest wfor the product to be on display in the fall.

Your sarcastic response at what appears to be mocking my post literally just emphasized the exact point I was making. I am obviously not actually advocating that they cancel the spring game. Which implies that in my example, the entire reason for a spring game is to generate fan interest. While nothing is official yet, it is being reported that they picked a weekday for the spring game. People have work, kids are in school (of all ages), non-cache valley residents are not likely to come. There is no logic to it. The spring game IS to generate fan interest (which can generate future ticket sales--something our AD sucks at), and to everybody except for those in our athletic department and coaches, it is obvious that there is one day per week that would give everyone the best chance to come. Of course there will always be people with conflicts no matter what day they choose, but there is no reason to pick any other day than a Saturday.

Actually usu,,,I was agreeing with your points of view. The spring game historically has been in the afternoon and not intended nor designed to impact evening plans for fans, boosters, friends and family. You were spot on as far as I could understand your post. No sarcasm intended my AGGIE Friend Peace.

Easter is observed on Sunday 12 April, 2020. Can't sort out why a Saturday noon to afternoon event would impact any local Sunday event. I see the reasoning of a Saturday afternoon spring game conflicting with Sunday as unreasonable.

Maybe we should cancel Easter, good Friday, pass over and all that stuff. It conflicts with a lot of christian holy days. Not everyone is LDS.

Probably should cancel all Saturday football and basketball games anticipating that we will damage preparatory events for Sunday. The longer I look at this plan the sillier it gets.

If the rationale is to avoid the Saturday of Easter weekend I understand to some degree but it seems like the department concedes that it occupies a lower spot in the pecking order too easily (deer hunt, what used to be UEA, etc)

Have it on that Saturday every year and make people accommodate the football program instead of the other way around. Might lose some people but you’d gain others and your core fans would appreciate it

I like to have games on Saturday as well as spring games. I do not like playing BYU on Friday to accommodate any religion after all high schools play on that date, and I have missed those games watching kids play ball. If you are a real fan you of course attend regardless of when the game is played, be it on Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday, after all people should accommodate the football program not the other way around, so being on Thursday should not bother us right.

I've been in the same boat you have been in. Although a couple of years ago I did manage to get the Sky View/Green Canyon moved to a Thursday night so that the Aggie/byu game could be attended on Friday night.

I'm glad you were able to do that, but true aggie fans would make adjustments to accommodate the aggie's regardless. If they held a spring game on good friday or even Easter I would attend the game, which is why I have problems with those that blame the school for the dates of games or even spring contest's

I would add, as brief amendment to my earlier thoughts, there is a difference between shifting real obligations and prioritizing leisure and recreation. I don't necessarily blame people for not going on a Thursday afternoon and leaving work or school, but for the school to move it to a Thursday because people may have recreation or leisure obligations on a Saturday is not a good way to build a program IMO.

I understand, but for some the week of Easter is a entire week of religious activity, However I would agree that Saturday fits the majority of Aggie fans, which of course is LDS and I do not believe they do the same type of thing around Easter.

I believe it should be held on a Saturday with a charge to attend, like $10 per person, and make it more than a practice type of game.

Let the ticket office staff figure out how to motivate the casual fan to pay $10 for a ticket to an actual game first.

Perhaps the answer is given that USU is not owned by any religion we should schedule games or spring scrimmages when ever it needs to happen, on conference weekend, Easter or pass over, basketball on Sundays or when ever. I promise not to complain. However I do understand why they try to work around religious dates when ever possible.

I most likely will not attend this years scrimmage given I find them rather boring, and it is just a excuse for people to bring their kids because of the cost, so the whole thing is a non issue, but I did need to point out that others have different dates that are not great because of their different religion.

I heard some dumb $hit about it conflicting with Easter weekend. That was the reasoning I heard.
Easter is observed on Sunday 12 April, 2020. Can't sort out why a Saturday noon to afternoon event would impact any local Sunday event. I see the reasoning of a Saturday afternoon spring game conflicting with Sunday as unreasonable.
Well, there are the Jewish players and their families ...

So to summarize your multiple posts in this thread (and others), people should not allow their religious beliefs to keep them from attending any Aggie sporting activity (in your words--that is what it takes to be a true Aggie fan), but you can skip the spring game because someone might bring a toddler who could potentially annoy you (because you have made it clear many times in the past that you hate all kids who can't sit through a four hour football game with their arms folded and head bowed the entire time), and yet, you constantly pat yourself on the back for how loyal you are? I think I captured it all, but let me know if I missed anything in my summary. :sarcasm:
