Re: Thoughts on QB
Except for maybe over Donald Penn or Shawn Murphy. Even in all the years we were bad, we have always had a few of the players we needed to be competitive, just not enough of them.

Except I specifically recall Don Penn being benched for Brennen Burningham against Nebraska. Everybody has bad days.GameFAQSAggie wrote: ↑January 6th, 2020, 8:51 amExcept for maybe over Donald Penn or Shawn Murphy. Re: Thoughts on QB
He may get the opportunity sooner rather than later. I honestly think GA will make this an open competition and if things look close in the Spring and Fall he may just go with Legas. Afterall, this is "his" guy, he made it priority #1 the moment he was hired to get Legas signed and it was with full intent to have him play QB. I think Colombi will have the obvious advantage due to experience and comfort under center at this level but with a new offense coming they are all starting at square one. You have to remember that Colombi, Calvin, and Peasley are not GA recruits while Legas is.

While, I believe this a pretty talented group of QBs, this is Henry Colombi's job to lose.Aglicious wrote: ↑January 6th, 2020, 5:26 pmHe may get the opportunity sooner rather than later. Re: Thoughts on QB
I know "his to lose" is a common phrase, but I hope it's not his to lose but instead - that he wins it.
Results of competition should always be the thing that selects a starter. Let the best player play - no favorites, just competition.

Re: Thoughts on QB
It’s “his to lose” because he’s won the job as the best QB on the roster to date behind Love.brownjeans wrote: ↑January 6th, 2020, 6:19 pmI know "his to lose" is a common phrase, but I hope it's not his to lose but instead - that he wins it.

It’s the same thing. You’re arguing semantics and arguing them with a group of people that it has absolutely no bearing.
Of the practices I’ve observed, Colombi was pretty far ahead of the other QB’s and it was definitely “his job to lose”.

I agree. I'm simply stating who the best QB is.brownjeans wrote: ↑January 6th, 2020, 6:19 pmI know "his to lose" is a common phrase, but I hope it's not his to lose but instead - that he wins it.

Re: Thoughts on QB
How far has Legas come? I’m very excited for him to be in the program. He did look way behind at Aggie Family Day, I’m wondering how much he has progressed since then.

Re: Thoughts on QB
I can still remember the year before was when Nebraska went 7-7, and still demolished us which was even worse for us, and hearing how bad Nebraska was compared to their dynasty, and fans started to call for Frank Solich's head. In the offseason, I was saying that if we beat Nebraska that year, that would have literally been the final blow to Frank Solich's job, no more talk of him being on the hot seat, he would have been fired on the spot if he lost to us. And with him being fired for going 9-3, it was a safe bet a loss to us would have been the final blow. This is one reason why similarly, you have to wonder why any coach would want to replace Nick Saban at Alabama, knowing they would have be considered horrible to go 9-3.aggies22 wrote: ↑January 6th, 2020, 9:15 amExcept I specifically recall Don Penn being benched for Brennen Burningham against Nebraska. Yes, it's symantics, but the concept of competition is important and too often gets diminished by other less important considerations.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑January 6th, 2020, 6:34 pmIt’s “his to lose” because he’s won the job as the best QB on the roster to date behind Love.brownjeans wrote: ↑January 6th, 2020, 6:19 pmI know "his to lose" is a common phrase, but I hope it's not his to lose but instead - that he wins it.

Everyone should have to re-earn their job every day.
I'm sure 22 didn't mean it that way, but we've had issues in the past where a worse player started for dumb reasons. Mostly under Wells... I don't recall feeling that way with Andersen. But maybe...?

Re: Thoughts on QB
Henry Colombi will start because he is the better of the four QBs. He has proved it and will continue to prove it. BUT make no mistake about it this is probably the most talented QB room Utah State has EVER had. All of these guys are competitors and winners.brownjeans wrote: ↑January 6th, 2020, 10:05 pmYes, it's symantics, but the concept of competition is important and too often gets diminished by other less important considerations.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑January 6th, 2020, 6:34 pmIt’s “his to lose” because he’s won the job as the best QB on the roster to date behind Love.brownjeans wrote: ↑January 6th, 2020, 6:19 pmI know "his to lose" is a common phrase, but I hope it's not his to lose but instead - that he wins it.

Re: Thoughts on QB
Yeah, I was mostly overreacting to a pet peeve of mine. I want the best players to play. I don't care who recruited the player, how highly recruited they were, how long someone's been in the program, or who their dad is. Play the best player.aggies22 wrote: ↑January 6th, 2020, 10:16 pmHenry Colombi will start because he is the better of the four QBs. He has proved it and will continue to prove it. I agree Colombi is that guy right now for sure.

Re: Thoughts on QB
Agreed, for all the reasons already stated. I expect to see Colombi win the job because he has the combo of talent and experience over the other candidates at this point. It would take something pretty amazing from one of the others to win the job. I was just pointing out the confidence the staff and GA already have in Legas which may help to propel him up the chart if things prove to be close on the field between he and the other QBs.aggies22 wrote: ↑January 6th, 2020, 6:14 pmWhile, I believe this a pretty talented group of QBs, this is Henry Colombi's job to lose.Aglicious wrote: ↑January 6th, 2020, 5:26 pmHe may get the opportunity sooner rather than later. Re: Thoughts on QB
I think Columbi is great and I think Peasley is even better. Here is to hoping he heals right! He is just so quick. I think he will be awesome with the offensive line that we have. Let’s face it Utah State is loaded at QB. I wonder what Legas will be like?

Re: Thoughts on QB
100% agreed. That rumor about Matt playing favorites during that 3 and 9 season always bugged me. If true, what a stupid reason for losing games.brownjeans wrote: ↑January 6th, 2020, 10:23 pmYeah, I was mostly overreacting to a pet peeve of mine. I want the best players to play. Re: Thoughts on QB
I remember Gary making it a priority to sign QB from Logan his first stint at USU. I don't believe the kid ever played. Maybe at ISU.

Re: Thoughts on QB
He never played at ISU either. He quit football after falling behind Darrell Garretson and Craig Harrison in the depth chart. I tell people that what I think contributed to him quitting is the fact that the quarterback position isn't like others where you are somewhere other than the top of the depth chart.
One thing that was funny was I ran into him at Lee's, and I reminded him that it was one place that you aren't supposed to act like Jameis Winston, in other words, steal crab legs. And he didn't even realize that it was even possible to steal crab legs and thought you had to pay for them at the seafood counter, and didn't know that they give them to you there and you can pay for them at the front of the store. Or walk out if you are Jameis Winston.

Re: Thoughts on QB
I hope Legas shows this Spring. That kid is an amazing athlete and can do great things here once the game slows down a bit for him. Calvin is a mystery to me...not sure what to think there. He seemed really distant from it all during the summer at practices.

Re: Thoughts on QB
Peasley is fast, but I can’t recall him throwing it much in his minutes. Colombi has proven to be able to do both (though he isn’t as explosive as Peasley in the run).Blue Sage wrote: ↑January 6th, 2020, 11:10 pmI think Columbi is great and I think Peasley is even better. Re: Thoughts on QB
Maybe that works in little league, but I don’t think we can tell opposing defenses to slow down and take it easy on our new quarterback. That type of request is frowned upon at the D1 level.
