Ena has been a disaster!!

Post by AgMac » December 20th, 2019, 8:37 pm

He is the worst D Coordinator we've had in over a decade. And it isn't close.

No discipline, the last play on defense was the epidamy of the whole season, the D end crashes instead of staying home on an option play like every D end is coached to do

I think the biggest issue this year on defense is we didn’t play to our players strengths.

But here’s the thing, we had a flawed, but competent defense last year with essentially the same players. That tells me this is much more about the Xs and Os than the Jimmys and Joes.

At least we don't have to worry or think about this disaster of a defense any more. Hopefully somebody (coaches) sees/knows something I don't. If Ena is the problem, let him go. If it was a lack of players, go out an recruit.

The fact that he didn’t start spying the qb after being repeatedly killed on scrambles tells me all I need to know.

Trouble is recruiting is over for 2020, and I’m not seeing any game changers coming in. This defense could use a few, no they could use a lot.

D lacked talent. Ena made it exponentially worse. He was so damn insistent on going to a 4 man front with only Henigar as his true 4 man end. So he converted our 2 OLBs to D-ends where they weren't equiped to play leaving Woody to clean up the mess. It sort of worked until 24 tackles a game got Woody concussed. Then Katie bar the door with a lazy d line and the worst coverage secondary in D1 football and no LBs.

That's a pretty decent summary of what has happened. The scheme is just so poor for the personnel we had.

All year long we couldn't figure out how to get off blocks, wrap up people and basically just play sound defense. It all goes back to the defensive coordinator. There were just too many games this year when we weren't even competitive. Losing to BYU, Air Force, Boise State and Kent State is not an embarrassment, but to be shellacked the way we were defensively is. I trust Gary to get rid of the dead wood and that includes Ena.

EnA’s not leaving. Remember when GA hired him how excited he was??? No way he lets his buddy go after one season.

I unfortunately think you are correct, unless we somehow get the “Allies closing in on Berlin” version of Gary that came out in his final days at Oregon State.

Ena really does deserve to be fired.

I remember when he removed his buddy Bill Bush as DC, so if he feels that's what needs to happen he will do it.

I imagine ena gets another year, but year one has not been a good sign. There certainly were injuries, but when you are letting offenses do things they haven't done all year or only against fcs teams something is off.

They would put 3 receivers on the open side of field and our DBs would be 7-8 yards off them. Then Kent would do running play, not really a sweep but run wide to open side of field. They would get 7+ yards on that consistently.

Why not come up right on the receivers once in a while? As I understand it, man coverage is at risk for going deep on you, which they did for first TD. The whole season was consistent with minimal adjustments and a type of soft zone. I recall AF game in particular.

So chicken or egg: We dont have personnel and hence run zone always, OR is it poorly executed/decision scheme?

 Jesus, Hick, that's just what I was thinking. Poor coverage combined with not being able to stop the run is a bad mix for your defense.

Every time I looked at our defensive alignment I thought we didn't have the right defense on the field. I did like the individual players. I thought our DBackfield was scrappy and played good enough. They clearly didn't know certain coverages early in the season but they improved throughout the year. Our DLine guys seemed solid individually. The LB play is hard for me to follow. I saw Woody making plays but after he went out I think we really were exposed physically at that position. And we're supposed to be LB U!

Coaching not players need's improvement

The problem with this team on either side of the ball was a lack of toughness. Football is a game that is a physical contest if you are not that strong you are in trouble regardless of the alignment. By the way they play a lot of 3 man fronts in this game.

I'm not defending any coach, but that lack of toughness is the real problem.

I understand everyone’s frustration and I don’t necessarily disagree with allot of what’s being said about Ena. However can we quit headlining this (I can't express myself without swearing) all over this board during recruiting, can’t be good for potential recruits especially defensive ones. Has to be a better way to vent maybe chat?
