Ranking of Mountain West Football Program
Chris Murray, of the Reno Gazette Journal/Nevada Sports Network, has written this ranking of the football programs in the Mountain West. Looks like Aggie fans have a lot of work to do, financially.

Re: Ranking of Mountain West Football Program
Certainly USU gets a solid return on investment. Issues about broad based fan support and budgetary concerns are real, yet we seem to do well offering a real college experience for players to participate and live in. The glowing financial future is located along the Wasatch Front which seems to be both a mystery and a blind sport for this Athletic Department.

Re: Ranking of Mountain West Football Program
How do they have us ranked sixth in facilities?! The stadium renovation, with the west stadium facilities, combined with the Laub Center and the Icon Center (one of the top strength and conditioning facilities in the nation), should put us in the top three or four at the absolute worst.

Re: Ranking of Mountain West Football Program
Yes, I can agree with his take on the program, except for that. There is no way the school is ranked that low with the NEZ facilities, the stadium renovations, and the strength and conditioning. It is the main reason why is the past decade the program has progressed to where it is. It isn't the cosistent crowd sizes, I wish there was demand for 40,000 per game, but that just doesn't happen for the November games.swordsman1989 wrote: ↑December 7th, 2019, 1:05 amHow do they have us ranked sixth in facilities?! Can't really see how UNLV is a more attractive place though. They have never had any sustained success for as long as I have followed them.

Re: Ranking of Mountain West Football Program
Swordsman,,,spot on, just spot on as you pointed out. Our facilities upgrade was splendid and a confirmation of the commitment of Utah State University to a high standard of intercollegiate football. UNLV is honestly a convention and drive through city, and the future holds many questions for the long term success of their football program.
The real financial support and fan base growth for Utah State Football can be found along the Wasatch Front.

Re: Ranking of Mountain West Football Program
Maybe it's selection bias at work, but I meet lots and lots of USU grads down here that have no idea what's going on with athletics unless USU is ranked or has beaten BYU. Sad but true. Us Wasatch front aggies have work to do. One of my fellow Aggie Friends, Intermeddler, has suggested we get a group of SLC aggies together to watch games and network. A sort of informal alumni group. I think it's a great idea.NavyBlueAggie wrote: ↑December 7th, 2019, 12:39 amCertainly USU gets a solid return on investment. I'll bet the author has not even been on the USU campus let alone a tour of the facilities.

Nope, he has. He is the beat writer for the Nevada Wolfpack and has covered many a game for the Pack in Logan.Aggiestyle wrote: ↑December 7th, 2019, 12:13 pmI'll bet the author has not even been on the USU campus let alone a tour of the facilities.

Utah State won't catch up soon and I think you already know why.

UNLV is funny to me though - They haven't been good at football like ever and they're pretty irrelevant in basketball too, sadly. Their fanbase is a lot smaller than people think. But because they were really good at basketball in the 80s they have this nostalgic brand clout or something

If you start a group, I’ll join. I live in SLC and drive to every home game in Logan. Gotta get Wasatch Front alumni involved!Madmartigan wrote:Maybe it's selection bias at work, but I meet lots and lots of USU grads down here that have no idea what's going on with athletics unless USU is ranked or has beaten BYU. Re: Ranking of Mountain West Football Program
Years ago there was a functional group of AGGIE alums and boosters functioning with the blessing of the USU Athletic Department. We were know as the WASATCH AGGIES and actually rallied some folks and got a bit of promotional attention from the general media. Forming a group is a solid idea, just takes time and some real effort to generate a functional gathering of AGGIE boosters. IIRC Steve McBride, Vic Saunders, Neil Whitaker, Jack Worthington, Bob Wassom and others that don't readily come to mind were some of initiators of this group of very focused boosters. Rod Tueller was the A D at USU during this time so you can appreciate a bit of when this occurred. Once things were rolling other AGGIES just appeared on the scene and the synergy was rewarding.Madmartigan wrote: ↑December 7th, 2019, 8:22 amMaybe it's selection bias at work, but I meet lots and lots of USU grads down here that have no idea what's going on with athletics unless USU is ranked or has beaten BYU. Re: Ranking of Mountain West Football Program
This seems like a great idea. There are thousands of Aggie Alumni from Weber through Utah county that are for sure not involved in athletics. This would be an awesome thing to start back up get some of those not involved to become excited about Aggie Football/Basketball.NavyBlueAggie wrote: ↑December 12th, 2019, 9:57 amYears ago there was a functional group of AGGIE alums and boosters functioning with the blessing of the USU Athletic Department. Re: Ranking of Mountain West Football Program
Back in the early 90's a few of us "Wasatch Aggies", formed a group of the same name. We had luncheons, auctions, fund raising events, and organized fund raising. We were doing a really good job. I even got Frank Layden to be the keynote speaker at one of our auctions. We were asked to sit on coach selection committee's , etc. I was the president for a couple of years. One of the things we were just ready to start was carpooling to games, and we would also go to one of our members houses in Bountiful to watch games. One day I got a call from Chuck Bell, AD. He told me we had to cease and desist the "Wasatch Aggies" because he wasn't in charge. He said nothing can be done without his permission, and we did not have his permission for this group. I tried to reason with him and convince him we could work together. He said no. It got a little heated, but I lost the argument. The Wasatch Aggies ended.sambonethegreat wrote: ↑December 7th, 2019, 8:23 pmIf you start a group, I’ll join. I live in SLC and drive to every home game in Logan. I would love to have some type of caravan or carpooling to games.
After almost 40 years of being a football season ticket holder, I quit 3 years ago. I come up to games that are not late starting. I can't drive in the dark very well with these old eyes.

Re: Ranking of Mountain West Football Program
McAggie..... it's not too hard for me to drive south through Sardine after the absurdly late night games. My edge is I follow someone else through Sardine so they can score the first rack of antlers...!!!!! I do understand the attraction of the T V, especially after the Boise debacle. It was nice to be inside with the heat, T V and available chow during the game though.

Re: Ranking of Mountain West Football Program
Interesting that Rod Tueller was all in for the Wasatch Aggies from the inception as Utah State didn't have the existing ability to work the Wasatch. Rod thought that was a good way to begin edging into a more prominent profile in SLC/Davis counties.mcaggie1 wrote: ↑December 12th, 2019, 1:50 pmBack in the early 90's a few of us "Wasatch Aggies", formed a group of the same name.
