A review of performance after bye weeks

Post by BigBlueDart » October 23rd, 2019, 11:48 am

After our win against Nevada I just wanted to take a second and acknowledge our stellar performance after bye weeks in recent history. We have won our last 11 games following bye weeks and you have to go back to 2011 to see our last loss, a 1 point loss to Colorado St. Those 11 wins have come at an average final score of 35.54 to 17. This winning streak was kicked off by that epic trip to Hawai'i in 2011. Here are our post-bye-week games going back to our last loss:

2019
- beat Nevada, 36-10
- beat @SDSU, 23-17

2018
- beat @BYU, 45-20

2017
- beat Hawaii, 38-0

2016
- beat Fresno St, 38-20

2015
- beat Colorado St, 33-18

2014
- beat @BYU, 35-20

2013
- beat Colorado St, 13-0
- beat Hawaii, 47-10

2012
- beat @LaTech, 48-41

2011
- beat @Hawaii, 35-31
- lost Colorado St, 34-35

I wish we could have a bye week every other week.

Contrast this with BYU's record after bye weeks:

Nov. 5, 2016 — Won at Cincinnati, 20-3

Sept. 29, 2017 — Lost at Utah State, 40-24

Oct. 27, 2018 — Lost to Northern Illinois, 7-6

Oct. 12, 2019 — Lost at South Florida, 27-23

Nov. 2 , 2019 — At Utah State (???)

Hopefully, Sitake keeps the trend going next week . . .

WOW..... such a schedule for this season and then playing the coogs the week after we tangle with a very physical Air Force team. How can we be impressed with the OOC game schedule?

Would have been 12 in a row had we caught a punt.....

But I’m not still bitter about it.

I forgot about Moats. Poor guy. He got a lot of undeserved anger for that. The only thing I remember from that game is having Turbin run the ball and literally everyone saw it coming.

It's weird how after all these years and what has happened since then this one still stings.

I decided to look at it a different way and looked at USU's record versus teams that were coming off their bye week when we played. A little lower than I'd like to see. Only a 58% success rate since 2011, not great, but we did beat BYU-p both times.

2016
- beat Fresno St, 38-20 -> L vs SDSU 40-13

2015
- beat Colorado St, 33-18 -> W @ Fresno State 56-14

2014
- beat @BYU, 35-20 -> W vs AF 34-16

2013
- beat Colorado St, 13-0 W vs Wyoming 35-7
