2 Deep - Going Forward
We now enter into the most important phase of our 2019 football season.
Those in the know, can you list a 2 deep starting roster, considering all that happened today? Or do you need a bye week to figure this out?
Coach A won't comment on injuries. I want to know how we look going into the Reno game with our starters.

Re: 2 Deep - Going Forward
I put together a depth chart based off what I saw on Saturday and assuming some guys aren't back from injury against Nevada to see what it looks like without them. Guys like Mariner & Repp may be back. I don't know. I do think Galeai will be fine, he was just done Saturday. I also am almost positive Warren will be back.
Aggies 22 is still a much better source on this, but I wanted to see if for myself as well so I put this together. (Red=Freshman, Green=Returning starter)

Jordan N is not our starting X receiver....he is in the slot. He starts in the H and switches in special situations.

How many practices has he had with Saiosi out? I predict he’s moved to the outside to help get our best WR’s on the field.taniataylor wrote: ↑October 6th, 2019, 5:31 pmJordan N is not our starting X receiver....he is in the slot. He starts in the H and switches in special situations.

Re: 2 Deep - Going Forward
Okay - So I'm fairly new to this forum. But already @aggies22, @Roy McAvoy, & @taniataylor have interacted with my post. Thanks you guys. Kind of cool to have some well respected members even notice a post from me.
I go back to my original question...where are we, 2 deep, going into our game with UNR? That's all I care about now. What is the status of our 2 deep roster? Who is available, physically & emotionally, and ready to go?
Drawing a line in the sand today, so to speak, for the season, and just focusing on what happens going forward. Starting with UNR.
Domo arigatou Mr. Robato.

Re: 2 Deep - Going Forward
Awesome, thanks for the update on the depth chart Aggies 22.
Tania, I'm still skeptical that with Mariner out we'll roll with Wright (a walk on) as the starter at WR without shifting Jordan out there at some point and then letting Compton/Thompkins play the slot.

Re: 2 Deep - Going Forward
I think the issue that will come up is blocking. Wright is a much, much better blocker than Thompkins or Compton. Although Thompkins is absolutely the faster player, when evaluated head-to-head he might not be the better overall player (yet).Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑October 7th, 2019, 7:07 amAwesome, thanks for the update on the depth chart Aggies 22.

As far as the status of players, if you look at the injury list on the depth chart I listed, I feel pretty confident in that (confirmed by Aggies22's depth chart) except with Repp. He's the only one who status up in the air. It'll be nice to get Jaylen Warren back after 3 weeks of rest.

I was hesitant with Repp as well. I just left him until I hear differently.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑October 7th, 2019, 7:51 amI'm not sure whether to pick on any sarcasm here or not. I think the fact that he sports the yellow hat on the sidelines along side Columbi and is signaling in plays makes him the 3rd string. Calvin is dressing but I have not seen him in this role yet.

Robato.

As far as the status of players, if you look at the injury list on the depth chart I listed, I feel pretty confident in that (confirmed by Aggies22's depth chart) except with Repp. He's the only one who status up in the air. It'll be nice to get Jaylen Warren back after 3 weeks of rest.

Passing on him is like taking candy from a baby. He can't break any blocks to prevent big gains. and misses a ton of tackles when he is 2 feet away with no blockers.
Yet there he is every game to give up at least 2 uncontested end zone passes per game where he just falls on his face. There has to be a freshman that deserves a shot.

Re: 2 Deep - Going Forward
There was a play where the ball was caught by the LSU receiver DJ was guarding, and Williams was the only defender near the ball. He made no attempt to tackle the player. He stuck out his hands like he was going to try to push the player out of bounds, but he totally whiffed and made it look like he was playing two hand touch football during recess at elementary school.sdiggety wrote: ↑October 7th, 2019, 9:31 pmThis is one of the biggest mysteries in the world. Re: 2 Deep - Going Forward
Does anyone else remember the Wake Forest series where Wake put him on an island and ran the same play to his side three times in a row because his coverage was weak and it was successful every time? I thought Ena was going to pull him after that game tbh. Surprised no personnel changes have been made.ususports wrote: ↑October 7th, 2019, 10:05 pmThere was a play where the ball was caught by the LSU receiver DJ was guarding, and Williams was the only defender near the ball. Re: 2 Deep - Going Forward
Same thing was happening against Stoney Brook. CBs were playing off, we had 1 deep safety. SB completed 3 or 4 little out patterns to that tall receiver of theirs. Then we switched coverage, 2 deep safeties, CBs move up to bump. Stoney runs that play again and Williams swats it away. Maybe he got lucky, but he looked like a different player getting in the face of the receiver at the line.Naked Bull Rider wrote: ↑October 7th, 2019, 10:20 pmDoes anyone else remember the Wake Forest series where Wake put him on an island and ran the same play to his side three times in a row because his coverage was weak and it was successful every time? For those with more knowledge than mine, could the scheme we are playing be affecting Williams play? What is different from last year. Full disclosure, I haven't watched the other games again to see if the same thing happened in those, I just noticed in the SB game. Just curious.

Re: 2 Deep - Going Forward
Part of what is different from last year is he is now our #1 corner. That means he is going to line up on the #1 receiver. Last year he wasn’t asked to lock down on their best receiver every play. That is at least part of the reason he gets burned so often.Aggie19 wrote: ↑October 7th, 2019, 11:03 pmSame thing was happening against Stoney Brook. CBs were playing off, we had 1 deep safety. Re: 2 Deep - Going Forward
Well a couple of notes. He has poor technique with his eyes when in man coverage, doesn't turn his head well and just doesn't really recognize routes well. Over the past 4 games of watching the freshman from LSU 24 and when we played that kid has really honed his skills in man coverage amd you could see such a clear difference between him and DJ. He might be another classic case of a great practice warrior that earns his spot each week in practice but is a complete headcase and let down in a game environment. Played with a ton of guys like that.TrueBlueFan wrote:Part of what is different from last year is he is now our #1 corner. That means he is going to line up on the #1 receiver. Re: 2 Deep - Going Forward
I think part of the problem when it comes to evaluating our cornerbacks by their practice performance is they get to see our scheme and lineup against the same dude day after day. It doesn't take long to figure out tendencies, cadence and even the exact play call listening to the same thing over and over. Because of this, some dudes might look better than they really are. For what it's worth confidence is a MUST when playing this position and DJ doesn't look like he is playing with much. My take falls into the same category as Bybs25 and his take on practice warriors.
