USU vs BSU Rivalry

Post by CaptainChaos » July 15th, 2019, 1:29 pm

Instead of hijacking another thread I thought I'd start a new one to brainstorm some rivalry names with Boise- Maybe its premature, but I'm optimistic and after we beat them for the next few years it'll feel more like a rivalry. :scotsman: I'm not starting off with any suggestions either, but I'll post if I think of something worth suggesting.

"The Rodeo" :joking:

There are broncs and bulls at rodeos. The trophy can be a giant belt buckle.

Well, since outside of last year(when it was 9) the margin of victory in this game has always been double digits.... Let's call it the (I can't express myself without swearing)-whoopin'

The Raft River Rumble

You keep using that word. I do not think that word means what you think it means.

The "Barn Burner" the basketball game could be the "Barn Dance"
"Battle of the Blues" or "Bout of the Blues"
There really doesn't seem to be a big common denominator with Boise, but I'm also thinking about things in reference to the Logan and Boise Rivers - Corals - Lasso's - dunno?

For it to be a rivalry it has to be more than a hammer vs nail game. Hopefully that can change in time.

We are only 2 wins shy of their biggest rival in Fresno.

I am not so sure this qualifies as a rivalry quite yet. First, it is way lopsided in Boise’s favor. Second, most “rivalries” are two teams who have played each other for years...a traditional rivalry. I don’t see a need to put a rivalry name on two teams where the word rivalry doesn’t seem to fit yet. IMHO

Cool. Did you even read the original post? BSU really doesn't have significant history with anyone. They started winning in like 1999 and I don't think they were Div 1 long before that. They have pretty well dominated every "rivalry" as far as MWC teams go. I just thought it'd be fun to come up with possibilities. Maybe we can call it the "wet blanket" for a few years?

Win first, but maybe “the corral showdown” or “coral battle”

USU vs BSU Rivalry

Post by CaptainChaos » July 15th, 2019, 4:14 pm

Looks like BSU has decent history with Idaho... if I was Boise I’d go so far as throwing a few games to Fresno just to distance myself from the Idaho rivalry. I’d love forBoise to hate us, but we’ve had the same issue as everyone else we gotta beat em first. Idaho has an impressive number if wins against them. Haha

I dont buy this argument. There are plenty of rivalries that have trophies that are very lopsided, the apple cup, Oklahoma state vs Oklahoma, Texas vs Texas tech.

Also we have as much history as anyone does with Boise.

We also compete with boise in other ways, many of which are more lopsided in our favor, ie: Basketball and Academics.

There are other things that go into making rivalries, Geographically we are the closest FBS school to Boise. We also compete for a division championship most years. In Scotty G's podcast last week the Boise State play-by-play guy said that Boise fans care more about USU than most conference mates.

Is it a huge rivalry? no. Do people care outside of northern utah and southern idaho? not really. Is it a fun regional rivalry that fans of the two schools care about? yes. is it that biggest rivalry for either school? no, but that is okay. why not make it official and get a trophy?

Can't both valleys claim a connection to the Oregon Trail? How about something related to that? Obviously not a wagon wheel.

“The Rocky Mountain Roundup!”
Roundup could be a name for a rodeo, where both the bronco and bull associate with and both Boise and Logan lie near the Rocky Mountains. This could also be the name of a rivalry with Colorado State.

Well, I buy it or I wouldn’t have said it. I am not sure, but you would be hard pressed to find another rivalry more lopsided than BSU vs USU

LW’s Truck Stop used to sponsor the regular season rivalry between UsU and Weber Club Hockey. Traveling trophy was a mounted cup (about 3 quarts) filled with chicken fingers.
