Ferguson

Post by BleedAggieBlue0 » September 22nd, 2018, 9:34 pm

When is that kid gonna finally get benched? I’ve never seen such an awful player be treated with such favor by a coaching staff. He is everything that is wrong with this defense.

And given Wade's performance last week continuing to play Ferguson is inexplicable. :bangwall:

He's also created a ton of turnovers.

I don't think Gaje matches up well against an option defense, but he's been very good so far this year. Jontrell looked very good in the second half today.

I like him. Leads the team in picks. Singlehandedly got us back into the msu game. Led tonight in solo and assisted tackles.

Gaje had 15 tackles to lead the team and his role was run defense support. What else was he supposed to do?

I'm more favorable of Ferguson- but it isn't a good sign for your safety to have that many tackles

They ran over 100 plays, thanks in part to our quick strike offense. Gaje was good tonight.

Normally I would agree, but against an option team it’s not to strange.

That's the strategy for option defense. One of the safeties is basically an extra linebacker and reads run first. That was Gaje tonight. Only five of his 15 tackles were in the traditional safety range of over 10 yards.

Completely disagree with the OP.

Ferguson has been great for us this year. Gave us a chance in East Lansing and led the team tonight. He's the vocal leader of the secondary and plays dam hard.

He is incapable of staying with receivers. He gets tackles because every team throws his way all game.

YEEESSS!!! Ferguson is HORRIBLE in pass coverage. He’s been the biggest liability this season, and was a big target last year for the same reason. Why don’t we move the kid to LB?

He was in great position on the two man coverage he had, wr's are going to catch the ball sometimes. I am starting to doubt you know how to assess pass coverage

He did have a pick six, while in pass coverage. It’s not his strength but I think he’s solid overall.

What are your thoughts on Shaq Bond? I think he was beat more than Ferguson. They played great against a tough offense that is designed to confuse.

The corners had a tough team getting off blocks, Wade is not as good a run defender as Ferg.

Shaq Bond seems a little small for a safety (5'10", 185 lbs). How has he been playing. Obviously impressed the coaching staff in short order. Apparently quite an athlete.

Gage flipped momentum in the MSU Gage with his pick six and had 15 tackles Saturday. Not sure why we're tearing him apart. Seems to be doing really well this year.

Simple, Gage is very good in run support; very poor in coverage. We'd like him to cover better -- easy to understand.

I agree with OP. Ferguson is TERRIBLE! All you have to do is look at his impact. He’s only played in three games, in those games we have won 66%; whereas we have won 100% of the games in which he didn’t play. Furthermore, we have given up 2 passing touchdowns in the 3 games he has played. I didn’t go back and look at the tape, but I’m sure both of those were due to blown coverage by Ferguson. Plus he only has three turnovers this year! At the risk of sounding like I know nothing about football, a safety with 25 tackles, 2 interceptions, 1 fumble recovery, and 1 defensive touchdown through three games doesn’t belong on the field, not in big boy Mountain West football anyway. I fully agree with OP, and I’d like to add that if Ferguson starts another game #firewells!

Bizarre thread. I think we have bigger concerns on this team than Gaje Ferguson. Not necessarily the best coverage safety on the team, but solid all around, high energy, and positive impact generally.

I totally agree, Gaje is one of those guys who gives %110 every play. What was it that GA said about jake doughty, that he plays like he has an extra body in his closet at home. I think Gaje is that kinda player too.

Better, but too early to tell. Winning games on the road will define this season -- good or bad.

USU needs to win two conference games on the road either Hawaii, CSU or Wyoming all three would make a great season.
