SJSU
Did anyone else watch the USF-SJSU game yesterday afternoon? SJSU jumped to an early 16-0 lead but ended up losing to the ranked Bulls, 42-22. The most noteworthy thing I saw was an almost empty Spartan Stadium.
There couldn't have been more than 500 people actually in attendance for the season opener. If you are the new SJSU president during the next economic downturn, how can you justify the money that it takes to run a major college football team, when there is no fan support or interest? There are probably at least 5 million people who live in the Silicon Valley or elsewhere in the Bay Area and could get to a SJSU game by traveling less than one hour, yet their attendance wouldn't be respectable for a 3A Utah high school.

Re: SJSU
Stanford's game started two hours and 30 minutes later and 7,400 miles away. That could have been a factor. But that does raise the question of when a school like SJSU, with their poor fan following, could schedule a home game at a time when they didn't have to compete with a full slate of games on TV around the country or live competition in their local, large market. Well, that would have been yesterday.NVAggie wrote:Stanford was playing. That probably took some fans away.

You have to have fans in order to have the Stanford game take them away.NVAggie wrote:Stanford was playing. That probably took some fans away.

Re: SJSU
SJSU's "official" attendance figure was 13377. No idea if that's total tickets sold including season tickets or actual butts in seats.AggieMan5 wrote:There was quite a few fans on the side behind the SJSU bench, much more than 500 lol.

Re: SJSU
Take a look for yourselves. From 1 minute before kickoff until a few seconds before kickoff on Saturday.

Re: SJSU
After seeing the other side of the stadium, I am increasing my estimate to 1,800 people actually in the seats. The other 11,500 must have purchased tickets and then realized that Stanford had a televised game that would start around the beginning of the 4th quarter of the SJSU game.treesap32 wrote:Take a look for yourselves. Re: SJSU
How many could filter in over the course of the first half, being delayed in traffic or having too much fun tailgating?dogie wrote:After seeing the other side of the stadium, I am increasing my estimate to 1,800 people actually in the seats. Re: SJSU
Yeah, the attendance sucked, but to me the bigger issue is how did SJSU convince USF to come play in San Jose? It wasn't for the money and USF doesn't really need to hit the California recruiting circuit all that much. And if their was a recruiting factor, then SJSU is not the place I would look at trying to play if I am bringing a team out from Florida.
Re: SJSU
A number of years ago, my kid used to play a lot of hockey games in the arena near by. At the time, I think we were still in the Big West and SJSU had made it to the WAC or MWC. I don't remember the conference for sure. Just for kicks, I dropped into the AD's office, he may have been assistant AD. I couldn't get over how cluttered his office was. He was a friendly guy. I told him that I was hoping that we could move up and join SJSU in the conference that they were in. He may have been trying to appease me but he agreed.
Then there was another time that I was in the area for hockey. SJSU was playing SMU. I was shocked at how few fans were in attendance. Then I looked out in the tailgating area and it was quite crowded even though the game was at least 7 minutes into the first quarter.
I just don't think that there is much interest for college sports. It was cool going to their baseball field. As I recall, they had won a National Championship an number of years prior.
Jeff Garcia contributed a ton of money to their training facility. It was a nice facility.
My last impression was going down fraternity row. The frat houses that I went by looked so ghetto.
There is a ton of money in that area. It's too bad that there is not more of a fan base and more interest.

Re: SJSU
That is correct. SJSU is in the heart of the greatest wealth creation system in the history of the world and it hasn't raised the SJSU athletics boat one inch, except I guess by getting them into the MWC.
