Computer rankings

Post by Roy McAvoy » September 19th, 2016, 7:34 am

Some on here can't even fathom how come fans are complaining and upset when we're 2-1. "We're 2-1, right where everyone thought we would be. What's the problem?"

Well I think computer rankings tell a somewhat accurate story.

The Massey composite rankings which compile a bunch of different computer rankings and put it together have USU as #76 right now, a few spots behind Troy and Southern Miss and right above Middle Tennessee st. and Akron.

Sagarin ratings (a very popular computer ranking) has USU as #78.
S&P+ ratings (by Football outsiders) has USU as #77. (Offense ranked #85 and Defense #50).
FEI ratings (by Football outsiders) has USU as #97.

As a member of the massey composite - I want to throw in one HUGE caveat. A lot of ratings this early in the season are dependent on preseason speculation. I think the 76 rating is fair (we haven't proven otherwise), but if you look at the final ratings for last season - http://www.masseyratings.com/cf/arch/compare2015-15.htm - you'll see we finished 75th. And in the preseason ratings - http://www.masseyratings.com/cf/arch/compare2016-0.htm - we're listed at 77.

I'd argue that where USU is listed right now is more based on showing nothing thus far to prove this team's much different than last year.
