I suspect Coach Wells possibly learned of a bit of a life lesson over how the whole DG thing went down (and how the season played out). We will see what was learned by how well the quarterback competition for the starter and back-up positions are handled/managed this year.

I tend to agree with GamesFAQSAggie in that I remember one of the greatest wins, but last year's BSU win is right up there as well.

Wells has handled QBs as good as anyone. It was inevitable with 3 bowl winning QBs on the roster that someone would transfer.

If the rumors are true, all Wells had to do would be to honestly open up the competition and it wasn't inevitable.

Possibly, but likely it is just an excuse when the writing was on the wall. I didn't like the move to start Keeton, I can imagine how upset a player would be. Most transfers are over playing time. I don't blame Garretson for transferring to a better place for himself, I just really don't like quitters.

Keeton was the best QB in spring and fall camps, and it wasn't close.

I too wish DG the best. He carried himself very well. On and off the field
He had moxie, and he captured his teams respect. He was a team LEADER!!

That said. His dad was the one that crapped the bed and had him transfer
Good luck DG

I don't know what went down behind the scenes but I do know he walked out the door and never and didn't show up to practice (a scrimmage) without telling a soul he was leaving.
I haven't heard a lot of details, but I did hear that Wells tried for 3 days to talk DG out of transferring.

The writer is very unimpressed. Recommends going with the freshman and basically just using the season as training for the future quarterback rather than use DG.

To be fair, if you take out all of his good plays...he's just not very good.

He would be starting this year for Utah State. I understand the desire to minimize DG. I don't agree with how he handled the situation (and for those who would like to blame Wells this was all on Garretson), but to try and say he was not a contributor to our program is ludicrous!

Wells did everything he could to keep him "here" and at the end of the day Wells decided he wanted people who wanted to be "here".

I also don't want to diminish what DG did here - both the good and bad. Having said that (and this is where I totally invalidate the previous sentence ;) ), the bowl win over Norther Illinois was primarily due to the defense (and Joey D.) as was the case for most of USU's wins a few years ago. DG finished that game with 121 yards passing with 1 TD.

I still remember one close-up shot of Jordan Lynch during the second half of the game. His eyes were wide open with a "WTF is happening" look on his face. Awesome.

Conversely, nobody can take away DG's major contribution during the game in Provo (see, I re-validated my first sentence :) ).

I do believe Garretson would be the starter this year if he was still with us. Some of his play as a freshman and sophomore was spotty, but he was on the field and contributing to wins, which is a lot more than happens with a lot of freshman and sophomores. I was disappointed to see him leave, and I wish him the best. He was a part of two great years to be an Aggie.

He had a great game against the Lobos in '13 but don't forget the near miss at UNLV saved by wildnat. The bowl game was so so and not due to DG's performance as stated above.
'14 BYU was a great 1st half. But Arky St was horrible and he wasn't exactly lighting it up against the lammies before he went down.
DG was passable. He may have even started over KM moving forward, but who knows. That doesn't diminish him. He was mediocre and that's just reality. The Beaver article notes as much.

I'm not minimizing based on his departure. I never was impressed, search it.
I will also question his ability to stay healthy.

I thought Garretson was a good quarterback. His record tends to agree with me.
