This is a ridiculous comment. I'm in the younger generation. I don't like mainstream rap, but I know what my peers like. If so, it's going to be popular.

Re: Super? Bowl
In a broad audience event such as the Super Bowl, the artists are going to have to comply with FCC standards for language and messaging content. If an artist disagrees, he should write his Senator. Or decide that a Super Bowl Halftime Show is just not his jam.
A General audience at a Super Bowl halftime show is going to have some 3 year olds and some 103 year olds. Adjust your schtick to line up with audience.
A majority of the audience did not and still does not give a give a rat's fat rump about your personal beef with Drake. Shut up and sing.
In fairness, Elvis did have those swiveling hips and the Beatles just never could really stop singing about Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.

Re: Super? Bowl
This is a fair point. I think it's the widespread culture shift away from traditionally "white music" to traditionally "African-American music". This has changed for all of the kids. Go to a high school game, it's all hip hop and rap. Also, there's a thing called clean rap music. Some people do a great job taking out all of the f-bombs while maintaining a good sound.USU78 wrote: ↑February 13th, 2025, 7:42 pmDid the music change organically or did the money want the change and the demographic with minds full of goo and the taste of rattus horibilis jump on board so they can hear f-bombs on their devices?ghsaggie wrote: ↑February 13th, 2025, 6:03 pmThis is a ridiculous comment. I have nothing against the Rap Music Genre... well, except that it is sometimes filled with a lot of punks trying to act all tough.
Mr. Lamar. You are a 5'6" twerp. It is obvious you are not going to be doing any more "growing up" in terms of height, so maybe focus on maturing. Enough already with the whole Gangsta tough guy image, and all that BS.
Mr LamEr should park the Polka Shuffle and take a few dance lessons from some teen-age high school girl dance squads.
Just saying... Wow!

Why is so important for you to tell a Pulitzer Prize winning artist to be more mature in his writing?
Why so much hate?
Presumptuous and ill-informed.
Re: Super? Bowl
Ok. I have no hate for the guy other than his performance sucked.
Repeating the well-publicized fact that the guy is 5-6 was probably not necessary. But if I was 5-6, I sure wouldn't be out there running my trap with all of his tough guy act.
In my house, where we DO have an adopted mix race kid, we really are not fond of dropping N bombs. We have far too much respect for him and his heritage and ourselves to even consider using those kinds of racial slurs.
And since you brought up the Pulitzer Prize, I invite you to go have a listen to the complex and racially Inclusive lyrics penned by Lamar. Gut-wrenching and sad, and frankly, stupid.
As a Special Half-time Musical Guest for the Super Bowl, he is none of the above.
Certainly Nothing Special.
No discernable musical talent.
Not a polite guest.

Re: Super? Bowl
My ward when I was growing up once had a night for young men's and young women's where we learned about standards, and at one point had a big discussion about rationalizing listening to music that swears with thinking that you don't listen to the words, you just listen to the beat. But no matter what you think you do, you DO end up listening to the words and learning the words.

The only correction I'd make is that rap music isn't technically "Traditional African-American music." Rap and hip-hop came on the scene more in the 90's (maybe the later 80's). Back in the day African American music consisted more of the likes of Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, the Ojay's, the Temptations, Ella Fitzgerald, etc.ghsaggie wrote: ↑February 14th, 2025, 12:06 amThis is a fair point. Re: Super? Bowl
I agree. If it will make my Aggie Brothers and Sisters sleep better, I will make a complete retraction of any claims of this year's performance being anything less than any past Super Bowl Halftime guest performance.
Personally, I did not care for it, but that is probably more of a me thing than anything else. I still do maintain that the artist and the producer and the TV network probably needs to vet their options with a little more scrutiny.
If an artist's playlist of musical selections are laced with "mother-trucker" and "truck that" references throughout, then his special half time show is probably also going to contain the same language. It seems like I recall George Carlin doing a whole bit about that and there still are certain things the FCC just is not going allow. I don't think it is super complicated.
You tell me. With the words all muted or bleeped out was the show still enjoyable? I have heard a few people reference it as a "bleep show". That seems like an accurate description.

Re: Super? Bowl
I fully understand that I (a middle-aged white guy) am not the target audience of Kendrick Lamar and others of that genre. That said, I can appreciate his music. I thought the halftime show was OK, though I only knew one song, amd even at that I couldn't understand any lyrics. That said, I wonder whether Kendrick Lamar is the right choice for a wide audience show like the Super Bowl.
Also, someone mentioned Taylor Swift. Like her or not, she is WAAAAAY bigger than the Super Bowl halftime show. And at this point in her career is much bigger than anyone who has done a recent show other than arguably Beyonce. You want someone who appeals to a huge audience? She's it.

Re: Super? Bowl
I don't see Taylor doing a Super Bowl halftime show until Travis retires.
Once he does hang up the cleats, you can bet the NFL will do everything in their power to have her perform.
Or I could also see her doing the half-time show if her and Travis break up and she uses it as a passive-aggressive way to steal his thunder.

Re: Super? Bowl
Heard a discussion of the Kendrik Lamar halftime show on our local sports radio. The mediot noted that a rock band hasn't played the Super Bowl halftime show in 15 years......but he noted that the SB is coming to the Bay Area next year and that there are plenty of rock bands from the area. Expect the 15-year streak to end

Re: Super? Bowl
Next year, being in the Bay area, get ready for the pendulum to swing back the other way for a minute with a Metallica and Neil Young rock show.
They will go hard and even the young kids will love it!
It doesn't really seem that hard to figure out. If you want the half-time show to appeal to a broad audience, then invite a Musical Guest that will appeal to to a broad audience.
Plus it will be heaps of fun to sing along with songs everyone knows rather than not daring to sing along because your Mother-in-Law is at the Super Bowl Party.
