Smith is leaving the program in a better place from a perception standpoint, but definitely not from a players standpoint.

Rural roots for sure, but the successful family business was anything BUT farming.
That may be but he still owns and runs a farm in Fairview. As Lt Gov he commuted to Salt Lake pretty much every day.

I want a proven recruiter. Agreed. In football you have 84 scholarships, in basketball you have 13. You could, theoretically, strike out on 3/4 and still field a worthy starting lineup in football. If you strike out on 3/4 basketball players you don't even have enough starters, let alone any depth.

It's extremely obvious he never had a real chance at the Minnesota job. He may have turned down the interview, but I'd bet anything he knew it was for appearances and Minnesota was never going to hire him.

There was more at play with the Minny hire, considering the state's 2020.

The parallels to GA 1.0 leaving aren't lost on me.

I hope Smith doesn't have the personal turmoil GA has had, but I hope his success on the court matches GA's success on the field after leaving USU.

I’m trying to have hope until this is official. Right now this feels a lot like Minnesota, I don’t care what the “talking heads” say. Give us a dang official announcement, let’s end this. Minny was a small fire of dry sticks amount of smoke. This is a full mountain of tires on fire amount of smoke.

Re: Just here for the meltdown

Here's the issue. The program is in a better place than when he took over (hopefully leads to some nice candidates), but the talent on the roster is worse. Next year is going to be a full, from the ground up, rebuild.

If I was hiring a basketball coach I’d look at hiring one of these four, Kyle Neptune, Brian Michaelson, Ulric Maligi, or Gerry MacNamara Good list. I know absolutely nothing about basketball assistants, but these guys all come from successful programs and have coached with some of the absolute best.

Seems like just yesterday we were playing this game.

Pasternak would be good.

Miles could be good, but is a bit of a re-run at this point.

The real question is, which lower level school in the midwest or south has a high-energy coach? That's who we should be researching.

I'm not mad he's leaving. I'm very disappointed it's Utah. It's pretty much the one place he could go where I would root for his failure. I hope he gets his 12-15 million and then does so poorly he's out of the profession.

Guessing a bracket is a crap-shoot. Basically nobody except this kid had Oral Roberts beating Ohio State. They probably win that game once out of 20 or 30 tries, at best.

It's what makes March Madness the best sporting event in the country (despite USU's tourney woes).
