Re: Depth chart predictions

Offensive rebounding numbers are interesting - and not what I expected. USU's ORb %, though better than average the last two years, were not all that significant against the norm and even less than many previous seasons. At the other end of the court is where the excellence shines. The last two year...

Re: Depth chart predictions

Many of the charts show what most have noticed. USU had about seven years of very average (against the nation) basketball. The last two years have been soooo refreshing.

"Fell into"

I see this term passed around quite a bit as in Queta fell into USU's lap. Or Sam Merrill fell into USU's lap as a legacy family member. I take exception to that term due to the fact that the coaches actually contacted the player and they ended up at USU. The classic example of "falling into a lap" ...

Jerome Johnson came to USU from Oklahoma - billed as (College HoFamer) Wayman Tisdale's backup.

Not a huge contributor, but solid if I recall. He played in the famous 3OT game against UNLV.

Re: What is the best comeback in USU basketball history?

Vague memory on this one, but it seems like we were down by more than a possession with less than 10 seconds left against the whY in the early 80's when one of their players punched Tann Tueller. The ensuing free throws and possession leading to a score won the game for the good guys. I was quite y...

Incoming freshmen

As many people are quick to point out, it is the usual case for an incoming freshman to struggle as they adjust to Division I basketball. I can think of a few exceptions to that scenario in my 40 years of watching Aggie Basketball. But in order to open the discussion, I leave it to others. What play...

In 1993, Jimmy Degraffenried hit an uncontested 3-point shot from 40+ feet in the Spectrum to give Weber a walk-off buzzer beater win 87-86. After the game, someone asked Eustacy why they had allowed such a shot. His response was (essentially) we got them to take the very shot that we designed - a 4...

It's looking like the smaller conferences are going to fill the 22 12-16 slots. So don't look for USU to be a 12. And since conference champions are not selected to be in a play-in game, 4 of the 11 slots are filled. So did a win over SDSU (plus no more losses) move USU past the other 2 11 seeds. Pr...

Here's hoping for moving ahead of him in NCAA wins.

I'll take a stab. No. If your conference tournament ends on Selection Sunday Eve (as the BW, WAC, and MW have always done in the past) several small conferences would already have crowned their champion. This year is an anomaly. However, I do believe that USU was the first underdog to win in the Big...

More good data: This morning, the bracket matrix http://www.bracketmatrix.com had 43 teams ahead of USU (not counting SDSU). Today's results will shake that up a bit, but those 43 teams come from 9 different conferences. That means that 34 of the teams ahead of USU are guaranteed to have at least on...

Sam hit 2 NBA distance 3s - each to give the team a lead. Over Flynn to take a lead while trailing. And over Feagin for the game winner when tied.

It's worth noting that Flynn was the conference DPOY. And Feagin 'owned' Merrill this year.

Sometimes, you just can't keep a Good Sam down.

After the Aggies closed to 29-28, they had 5 turnovers in 5 minutes (over six possessions). The score was 37-30 and SDSU looked like they had weathered the storm.

Enter Alphonso. 2 threes later it was 37-36 and back to game on.

Who to cheer for

One of the best benefits of today’s win is that the committee has no way to vote USU out. So instead of trying to see which teams to cheer for to avoid our bubble bursting, it becomes easy. We want the lowest seed in every conference to win the auto-bid. Each time that happens it pushes the Aggies u...

At 9:40, when Sam came back in and the defense switched to a zone, UNM came apart. At that time, Sam had four fouls. Bairstow had four fouls. Queta had 3 fouls (soon to get his fourth). Giving up big leads

It seems that this season, more than I remember, has a lot of games where teams give up big leads. One of the early examples was the USU-LSU game. Maybe it is a function of the NCAA following the style of the NBA where such things have been happening for years. Pretty much every day there seems to b...
