Re: major program lesson learned - we must improve our chain gang

This is a two edged sword, and depends upon whether you root for the team that needs more time, or the one that wants less, and on any given day, we could be either. However, I agree, it should not have to rely upon the speed of the chain gang. Refs should be able to spot the ball and run the clock ...

I don't know if this means anything, but there is no hotel vacancy in the entire valley this weekend. My wife and I tried to book something for this weekend last week, and it's sold out. I take it back, there is a room at the La Quinta for $450.00.

Re: Some good expansion news

I would push back on BSU and the others threatening to leave. It would be a huge blow to our conference, but at some point, the conference becomes untenable anyway if a sizable minority of its members are being favored and put in a systemic advantage over the others. Let them leave. We'll find a way...

Re: Forfeits if Covid is an issue

I have a good faith question and don't want this to devolve into a political or philosophical discussion, but at what point, if ever, will someone be able to play with COVID? Players have played with colds, the flu and probably any number of other illnesses in the past. Let's suppose an entire team ...

What do we know about WSU? It appears they played 4 games last year and lost 3 of them, all by two touchdowns or more. Granted, those losses were to Oregon, USC and Utah. Their QB is a sophomore, who started as a freshman last year. He's from Hawaii and knows the new coach's scheme, but got in troub...

Re: ESPN article regarding quality of MW basketball jobs

If it's just coaches voting, then this means something, but only as to their perspective. The perception among the coaches is that they would rather coach at most of the other programs in the MW. What does a coach look for? We can start with what most employees look for, getting the most money for l...

Re: More Potential $ for Student Athletes

Unless there is a mandate that all athletes within the same school get paid equally, which I don't see happening, then a grading criteria will have to be developed, either by sport or worse, by player. Claims of gender pay inequity will increase if the former, with the latter, players with agents tr...

Question for those who watched the spring practices/games

Are the tight ends a "once in while" option in Anderson's offense, or an important and regularly used component? I've heard concern that so far the evidence supports the former.

The meaning behind transfers was more intriguing years ago when the athlete had some skin in the game and had to sit out a year. Now? With no real consequence to transferring, if a kid wants to be closer to home, get a little more playing time, pursue a different degree, or follow a girlfriend, etc....

Re: Smith hire looking like a train wreck for the U

I expect Smith will turn out to be a great coach for Utah. I'd wish him success, but it's Utah. Ugh. In any event, I think P5 schools have pressure (real or just perceived) to make a splash hire, either with a former player or some other name. They are not suited to finding a diamond in the rough or...

I think Worster has the stuff to be really good, and he's young. I don't know much about Jones. Eytle Rock and Horvath seem good, but it's hard to lose to young player who can provide a long term foundation for a team. In the end, time can only answer this question.

For me, it's clear the reporter was looking to create some drama. In essence he was looking to pick a fight of sorts. This effort was transparent to most and they called him on it. I won't be surprised when the only real high school recruiting we do is going after mission kids because they are more likely to remain at Utah State once they get here. And we've typically had tremendous success with mission kids. They play very well once they return. Says Jordan Stone, Danny Berg...

At the risk of stating the obvious, this one hurts because it's loosing a contributing freshman, no sophomore, who will only get better and prove to be a solid foundation for the Aggies. Did Pederson recruit him?

Am I mistaken, or was there no SLC media at the press conference? KVNU, the Statesman and the Harold Journal all identified prior to asking a question, but the remainder of the questions appeared to have been asked by fans and boosters in attendance. Don't look past Miles. I think that would be a mistake. He'll get to coach in a good conference. He'll be paid well and if anyone can do well there, it's him. He would have been a good hire at USU. I predict that inside of a year or two, SJSU will not be a "gimme" on the schedule anymore. The MWC ha...

Good statement, but nothing one wouldn't expect. I imagine it was genuine. His timing was off, and he should have contacted the players the second he made his decision or told the U, and he was tone deaf to the situation, e.g. trading rivals within the same state. He'd probably admit that he could h...

Coaching is a unique career. If Craig did what he did in “normal career” it would be looked upon as doing what’s best for Craig, and not as a “douche” move towards Utah State. If Craig sold computers in Logan and was making $150,000/year and had the opportunity of moving to Salt Lake and make $450,...

Short Summary of Saturday's Scrimmage

It's hard to analyze much when playing yourself, but running backs seemed very quick and powerful. WR's dropped a few, but TE looked good. Cooper Legas was on it. The threw an INT, but he threw well and fast, ran well and managed the team well. He was impressive. That OL transfer from TCU is huge. D...

I don't think these jobs work like the ones you and I have. Resumes and interviews aren't really a thing in this context. I have to think Hartwell knew about it. Probably gave permission for it, which I understand is customary. However, it's not often you hear of specific coaches interviewing for a job. Normally, it's just a list of reported or expected candidates. Leaking the name of a coach who is interviewing is une...

Boosters may way splash, but it's not out there. At most, you're looking at a highly successful G5 coach, and that's about it. Assistants, no matter what school they are from, is not splash. Dutcher provides a little splash, the coach of Loyola Chicago gives you some, and maybe Rick Pitino at Iona, ...

Playing games is never foolish. That's the point of the whole thing. Bagging make up games only if it helps certain teams look more attractive in the face of the risk that they may lose is just bad form. If Coach believes that an injured Miller is as good or better than a healthy Anderson, he plays, and he should play. It would be silly to bench him simply because he's not 100%. However, if Coach believes that he can't meet Anderson's input and effort, then he probably sits. It's not too complicated.
