Given the lack of good candidates, I bet they leverage some of their huge donors, of which there are several, and throw all the money at Madsen.

BYU will have no trouble at all coming up with the money once they decide that's their path.

If Pope left, would Mark Madsen be interested in BYU? I'm sure he'd be their 1st call and he's a better coach than Pope, if you ask me. (Not to mention being in the Big XII rather than the absurd West Coast of the ACC.)
